Open April thru October, the World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world located on an actual mine yard - the Orphan Girl. This 44 acre museum exhibits more than a century of American history and brings it to life. Explore more than 50 structures, ranging from the 100 ft high headframe to the many buildings of Hell Roarin' Gulch, a turn of the century mining town. Our displays and exhibits focus on mining and the related culture and ethnic groups that made Butte, MT their home. The World Museum of Mining offers two underground mine tous that take you into the depths of the Orphan Girl mine. The 65 ft tour is a glimpse of the underground and takes about an hour. The 100 ft tour gives more history and gives visitors the opportunity to see the Orphan Girl vein. The 100 ft tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. Get fitted with a miner's hard hat, cap lamp and battery belt to experience life underground! Space is limited and reservations are recommended. The World Museum of Mining is open daily at 9:00 am April - October. From time to time weather conditions affect our ability to offer all available services.

Having read the book Fire and Brimstone about the 1917 mine disaster and accompanying labor disputes in Butte, we found the visit here fascinating. The exhibits, including those around an old head-frame and the reconstituted mining town, were very interesting, but even better was the...More

If you've seen one of the other mind shafts in town, you've seen all you need to know. No price ddiscount for seniors and town looks rather small and shabby. Did not want to take tour (which was $15.00) so I decided to leave.

One of the best mining exhibits with displays depicting actual above and below ground mining operations.

This worth a stop but check the schedule for tours if you want to go down in the mine, They only take a few people on each tour because of safety.

This is a fun museum all around-- and not just for the really fantastic mine tour. We were pleasantly surprised by the Star Trek Action Figure exhibit-- and I'm sure a true Trekkie would be too. The Frontier buildings were fun to peer into, and...More

The recreated mining town and other exhibits there are ok. But a stop here is really all about the mine tour IMO. If you happen to already be in Butte, fine, you can go and not do the underground guided tour and that's fine. But...More

The underground tour is intriguing as you step back in time and learn about mining history and practices. There is also a great mining town set up so you can really get a sense of what life was like back in the day.

The 65 ft tour takes 1 hour, the 100 ft tour takes an hour and a half. We also recommend at least an hour for the Museum.
