Great place for a romantic retreat. Dinner at the restaurant was great! Be prepared for "Old fashioned" Internet access though.

As one walks along the town's riverbank, one can stop and read the many historical signboards and view the occasional statue and learn a bit of American (and a bit of Canadian) history.

The whole town of Ft Benton has spent years recreating/rebuilding the old fort there dating from 1847. Starting with one of the original corner blockhouses also called a bastion they have rebuilt the fort to its original specifications. Within the standing on end log walls are several buildings including the the Trade Store, the Warehouse, the Blacksmith and Carpenter's Shop,... More

A cool town with a historic hotel and you can take in a lot of history! I would imagine a river front room is extra and I do not think I would pay the difference next time.

The beauty of this area is great. You must do your homework before you go. The history of this area is the real gem. This has the oldest structure in Montana...the stockade. This was the jumping off spot for the Missouri River. It is the furthest point a river boat could go and could only go there in the spring.... More

A wonderful neat old city, the end of the river for goods delivery before the falls; we particularly enjoyed the agricultural museum showing lots of neat old stuff from the early 1990's; things like old cars, moonshine still, Maytag roller rinser machine, plow, and a chance to take lots of pictures for your family.

The fort presents it's story in touchable displays and well written explanations. Be sure to visit the original blockhouse and to go upstairs as well.

Fort Benton is now a quiet community on the upper Missouri, much different than the calamitous days of yore. They have done a great job rebuilding a replica of the fort, numerous statues, signs, old archecture, and of course, you are on the Missouri River, a great float trip. Spend a day goign through the town's history as the head... More
