The continental divide is just a short 10 miles from Helena. It is a favorite local cross country trail, a hiking trail (up at the top and you can even drop a car off and hike to the bottom or the mountain), and a great camping location for a quick getaway and boulder hopping for exuberant grand kids.

So it can be sunny in Elliston and in Helena, but snowing up on Mac pass. Be sure to check the MT Dept of Transportation webcam to find out the "ground truth" about the pass or else you can get in a bad situation in short order up there. Pro Tip: watch for cyclists, use second gear on the decline... More

best place to stop if you don't have a lot of time and get the real feeling of montana ; standing on top of a mountain with views that pass your ability to see. great place to stretch your legs and your four footed friends legs as well.

I somehow love the twilight time of evening when it is still light enough to see but dark enough to where the lights are coming on. This view of Helena from Mcdonald Pass Lookout is awesome that time of night.

Beautiful views!! Spectacular. ......weather can be crazy up that high though. Weather in town can be fine yet it could be blizzarding on the top of the pass if you visit during the winter months. Takes less than 1/2 hour to drive to from town.

There are a couple of places to pull off the road when you drive over MacDonald Pass. It's worth taking a few minutes to do that and to see some of Montana's best views. Beautiful!!!

I have visited this pass in summer and winter. The roads are very accessible and the trails out of the parking areas are well marked. I love the view and the fresh air. Speaking of air, I have never visited the pass without experiencing strong winds so dress according. Even in the summer the air is cool.

It's hard to beat this view without getting out of your car and hiking a bit. Worth getting off the interstate and taking the alternate route.

We drove through MacDonald Pass in July. The roads are good and without construction. Winter can be rough because of snow, ice, and blowing snow. Just go prepared and have a great drive!
