The best way up

This is something different and the most fun way to get to the top. Bring something warm, when we left the bottom it was mid-70s. Up top it was mid-30s with a stiff wind.

We visited as part of a shore excursion from the Serenade of the Seas in October. The foliage was nearing peak and the mountain had a coating of snow. The railway trip provided outstanding scenery and an excellent narrative by the conductor. However, because of winds exceeding hurricane force we were forced to stop about 3/4 of the way up.... Excellent attraction.very interesting history of the railway going up Mount Washington. Lots of interesting information in the museum. The guide on the train was very informative and did an excellent job narrating the facts and stories about the building of the railway.

Memorable experience. Earliest trail of the day is the steam engine......usually sells out in advance so recommend pre-purchase. 1 hour ascent at steep grades. Unencumbered views, even on cloudy overcast days. Trains leave ON TIME. still worth the $45 for the biodiesel engines ascending in 45 minutes every half hour

We were lucky enough to go on this most excellent train during peak foliage season in October 2015. The ride last about 55 minutes up, 1 hour on top of the mountain, then 55 minutes down. Conductor was knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor. I would definitely recommend to go on this train at least once in your... More

We arrived and picked up our pre-ordered tickets and boarded our train at 10.15 for a 10.30 start. The journey to the top of Mount Washington (over 6000 feet) takes around 45 minutes with the 'brakeman' providing an interesting commentary on the way up. At some stages the slope is over 37%. We were very lucky as it was a... More

It's a classic. Trip up a (very safe) cog railway. You go only a short distance of 3 or 4 miles but go up in elevation about a mile and the change in plant life is dramatically visible. Interesting, too, because of the frequent bad weather caused by the summit being at the confluence of northern and southern weather currents,... More

I was up here in New Hampshire with a Veterans organization and one of our activities was to ride the Cog. I hadn't been on the Cog in almost 30 years and I had just as much fun on the ride up the mountain this time as I remember having as a small child. Unfortunately , we couldn't make it... More

The cog is a great experience because it gets you to the top of the amazing Mount Washington. Everyone should get there one way or another - I love to hike but I also love to take my non hiking relatives up the cog. And check out the observatory at the top. So cool!

This was a very neat experience for sure. This little engine took us up 6,288 foot to the summit and what a view on a clear day. I have heard it is a terrible view on a cloudy day. The guy that worked the brakes on the cog is quite the jokester, he teased the brakes were out and it... More
