Used this station on several occasions to get to and from NY whilst staying in NJ for a couples break.
General theme - Extreme confusion! Platforms not clearly marked, and not enough signage directing passengers to the platforms either.
Once you figure out where platforms...More
You don't know what you don't know. We purchased our tickets each time from a window agent. No 2 agents were the same agent, but all were very friendly in directing us. They were all knowledgeable about where to catch the train and how to...More
NJ Penn Station is a great resource for traveling through the Northeast Metro area. It connects the PATH, NJT, EWR airport transfer and Amtrak trains and also the Greyhound. The station has decent food options, a liquor store with an oddly impressive selection and also...More
This was our first experience taking a train from Newark to NYC. I can’t say enough about it.
It was easy to figure out where to go to buy tickets as well as where you needed to be to pick up the train.
I go through this building every single day on the way home from work, and I never cease to be impressed by the superb architecture and excellent set-up of the building for its purpose -- moving people from point A to point B. It's a...More

Okay, when you arrive at Penn Station, go to the Amtrak booth on the left hand side of the terminal from the front entrance to buy your ticket. They have a machine there to buy but talk to the ladies at the counter if you have an Amtrak Miles Program card to get your points.
There is an information booth in the center of the terminal as well as an electronic board that shows all the trains arriving and departing so you will know what platform to go to. If there is any question, either ask at the information booth or listen for the announcements.
There is a McDonald's there is you need a snack or breakfast. Ignore the people begging, they are harmless or let the manager know and she will kick them out of the restaurant. The food at this one is quite good. There is also Zarro's Bakery that is good.
The bathrooms are safe but like any terminal, DO NOT leave things lying around or they will walk away on their own. There are police posted in the terminal if you need any help. In the main terminal, there are benches to relax on until the train comes.
You should get on the train with no problems. Just keep everything in site and watch your baggage both in the terminal, the bathroom and the platform. If anyone asks you for money or they lost their ticket, simply do what we all do "tell them to "GET LOST", they will not bother you again!
