Most visitors to Berastagi will climb Gundaling Hill, only 30 minutes from the town center. At the top you will have a clear view of the two volcanoes, but the place is relly ruined a little with so many souvenir shops and cafes. Good to be here for sunset, if you are lucky with the weather --- we were not!

Gundaling hill is one of the famous tourist attraction in North Sumatra. The landscape is very beautiful with cool air. The entrance fee to gundaling hill is Rp 4.000/person. In gundaling hill, we can ride the horse with the price Rp 35.000/person. Here also available photographers who are willing to take our pictures with a beautiful scenic backdrop of gundaling hill. To use the service we just pay Rp 15.000 for one photo with A4 paper size. Here we can also see the beauty of mount sinabung and mount sibayak, and the expanse of agricurtural land in Karo Land. But there are things that reduce the beauty of gundaling hill, which is a lot of scattered waste around this place and many visitors who are not obedient to the rules of traffic. So we have to be careful when bringing small children here. In this place also provided various kinds of souvenirs such as live flowers and food at quite affordable prices. In addition, what makes this place comfortable to visit is a friendly locals to visitors.

Having been to many of Indonesia's islands, I can give my expert opinion that the word "peaceful" is not always easily associated with this culture. I don't mean it as a criticism, necessarily, it's just that the people tend to crowd around in the crowds can be very overwhelming at times. But in the case of Gundaling Hill, there were not mobs of people trying to sell stuff to tourists, nor were there mobs of annoying tourists making a lot of loud complaints. This is a peaceful location with an astonishingly beautiful view of Lake Toba. It's a long trip to get here, and you're still quite far from your established destination... So you wont spend too much time here. But if you find yourself in this region of Sumatra, you really do need to take a few photos, and enjoy some quality peace & quiet for a few minutes.

Been here on 3/5/15 with family. Using taxi blue bird to here. Cost me IDR800k.
Weather not so cold but ok. Lot of shop selling shirt and souvenirs and Yes it's cheap to compare in Medan.
There were also horse ride cost IDR100k for hour or one round with horse cart IDR30k.
Upgraded need if want it get tourists attraction. It's not attractive and hygiene need to improve.

Maybe I myself expected more from this hill...The sunset scenery of Mt Sinabung was nice but to my disappointment the place is not well maintained.. The biggest letdown is of course the amount of rubbish you see thrown into the hillside and road.

Small hill with view of mount sibayak- however the view is unremarkable. Can go a visit if you're around the area- but not worth going a trip specially to visit this hill.

This place is catered to local tourists - horse rides, pop mie stands, selfie spots etc. But this hill is perfect for a view of Mount Sinabung with a gorgeous sunset behind it. It's also nice to sit and chill at the various mats set out along the paths.

The scenery in Mt Gundaling was awesome as you can see two active volcanoes: Mt Sinabung and Mt Sibayak as backdrops. On sunny days, one can enjoy the breathtaking, panoramic views of the two steaming volcanoes overlooking the very large expanses of peaceful village farm houses on the outskirts of city of Berastagi.

It was on Sunday and Easter (mid-April) when I visited Berastagi, the city in the cool highland of Sumatra. Coincidently, it was also Indonesia’s public holiday. Many locals including families spent their holidays by erecting tents or sun-covers and went camping all over the areas. Unfortunately, what I noted was that the natural areas were spoiled by the public. I noted that every inch of the ground and grass was covered with garbage: plastic bags, bottles and wasted tissues everywhere, to name just a few. Honestly, I would say this was probably the dirtiest place I have ever visited in Indonesia. Consider there were a lot of restaurants or food stalls located along the streets used by tourists and the locals alike, the current situation would in turn adversely affect the public health and hygiene of the area.

This was a total waste of natural resources. I think the relevant authorities must take immediate action to keep the areas clean and tidy. More importantly, they must also do something to educate the public to be aware of the importance of a clean environment in order to keep the place appealing to tourists. Reputation is of utmost importance especially for a tourist destination where economic take-off has just started to take place. Otherwise, using strenuous methods to promote Sumatra as a land of natural beauty would be in vain.

I like the view from this place. It offers horse riding. Your can some good T-shirt as souvenir here. Fruits are fresh here and its so tasty. The only trouble is the traveling from Medan city to this place approx. 2 hours and above.
