We travelled here in a 4WD Jeep, Leave the 2WD luxury sedan at home. Roads are rough and well travelled by lots of visitors. Bumpy but worth the drive with the right equipment. Fed chipmunk off my knee while having lunch on a log.

We took a guided jeep tour up to Goose Lake. Just about had our insides jarred out, but the view when we made it to the top was worth it! Had a great time meeting new people during the drive. I do not recommend this...More

Begins with a wet trip across the Red River to get to a rough jeep trail best suited for ATV/UTVs, but often attempted by jeeps and cars (the latter is definitely not recommended).

We visited Red River for the first time. Booked a trip to Goose Lake with New Mexico Adventure Company. They use Ford F-250 trucks with 4 wheel drive and fitted with 3 rows of bench seats and seat belts. Trey was our driver/guide. We had...More

Take a camera, a jacket, and a flashlight for exploring the mining caves along the way. There are water crossings depending on the time of year and weather. Sheep dot the mountainside at the lake and the chipmunks and marmets love peanuts! Take firewood and...More

We have been 4-wheeling for many years and are used to rough trails. This one seems to be especially rough. We were wondering if it was going to be worth it and luckily it was. There is a beautiful and oh, so peaceful lake at...More

Great trail for experienced riders, not for the faint at heart. Don't even think of taking less than a four wheel drive or OHV. Full size pickups will have trouble due to narrow passages.

We rented a side by side and traveled up to Goose Lake. It was an amazing view. The road can be a little sketchy because only one vehicle can pass at a time, so sometimes you have to pull over to back up to let...More

A thrill of a lifetime. Very rough and bumpy, but so much fun. Ask for Trey as your driver/guide. He was great.

About how long is the hike up? I know that would depend on the person, but for a couple of middle aged people who are adequately in shape - can you give me an estimate?

I really cannot recommend hiking the trail. If you are an avid hiker, I would guess at least 3 to 4 hours to get to the lake from the highway. We were in the jeep, and since the trail was as rough as it is, it took us... More

We travel in an RV, so we can't camp at Goose Lake. It allows tent camping only. We usually just 4 wheel it and enjoy the day. TripAdvisor wouldn't let me include a link, but look at the USDept of Agriculture Forest... More
How far from Red River is Goose Lake? Also, are there places to rent fishing gear so we do not have to pack ours? Thanks.

The trailhead of Goose Lake is within a mile of the north city limits. I saw a few rental stores but I can't tell you if they rent fishing equipment. Tip for riding Goose Lake. Go early morning to avoid the bottleneck during... More
