A close up view of the Shiprock leaves one feeling a sense of awe, which never grows old, even after repeated viewings. To get close, I would recommend an SUV, pick up, etc., as the dirt road is rutted and very-slow going in places.

This formation is out in the middle of nowhere. It is about 1 hour from Cortez Colorado. I didn't get to go to the base of it but from a distance it is impressive. Even saw it from atop Mesa Verde NP.

Passed Shiprock on the way to Monument Valley. It's a pity you cannot get closer but it is still an impressive sight to see. We managed to find several point along the highway to get some pictures.

Shiprock is sacred to several tribes, and it is a marvel to see - it rises out of the desert floor and is visible for all directions.

I wish I could have found a route that got us closer to it, but even the road we took was very bumpy and was glad we were in a 4x4 truck.

This isn't something you go out of your way to visit, but if you're in the area, it's worth the little bit of a drive. This is a beautiful rock formation that isn't swarmed with people climbing all over it, and carving stupid stuff into...More

We saw this for quite a bit on our drive north towards the 4 corners. It is a really beautiful formation standing in the middle of flatness. I wouldn't say it's worth a detour (read: not THAT amazing) but if you're traveling that direction, it's...More

Shiprock rises up over 7000 feet from the plateau. It is fractured volcanic breccia flanked by dykes of igneous rock. To get close to it (rock climbing is strictly prohibited as it is both dangerous and a sacred Navajo space), there is a half mile...More

Breathtakingly beautiful rock formation. It was absolutely picturesque as the early February sun was dipping low in the west and all the pastel shades of pink, lavender and blues surrounded this natural wonder. A remarkable sunset I won't soon forget.

I first learned of shiprock from a colleague at work. He brought it up on google earth. Incredible how large this formation is ( nearly 1600 ft tall). The lava flows ( now walls ) that lead to the shaft ( shiprock is the remnant...More

What would be the easiest way to get to Shiprock from the town of Shiprock. My wife and I want to go there this coming weekend. Thank you.

Drive south from the town of Shiprock on US 491 for a little more than four miles. Turn right on Indian Service Route 13 and there's a pull off place about 5.5 miles from 491. There's a dirt track there that will get you... More
