Not all that far from the great metropolis, this natural treasury of ancient wood transports visitors to days before man wandered the land. A riot of vegetation fills the space between sea-facing and landward sand dunes -- the swale, marked in particular by great holly...More

Amazing sunken forest, with boardwalk running through the whole forest. About a half hour walk to go through and then you emerge on one of Fire Island National Seashore Beaches. A must see.

This place is beautiful, and the boardwalk makes it easy to hike through. A very unique ecosystem! The beach that goes with it (ocean side) has good facilities. I don't know what Superstorm Sandy did to it -- nothing I hope!

This is a ranger run park on Fire island. It has a path that takes one on a unique path through forest that is below sea level making for interesting life and growth.

It's always fun to walk through the Sunken Forest. Your never know what type of vegetation or animal life you will see along the way. It is so peaceful that it makes you think you are part of a great adventure.
