Description:

Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family...

Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

The grounds are pretty and the view is spectacular of the Hudson River and Valley. It was a beautiful, sunny, breezy day. I gave this site a 3 because of the house tour. We visited on Saturday, 04/29, and made reservations in advance for the 3PM house tour. We were excited to tour the home, and anticipated an hour long... More

We visited Olana on a Spring weekend and it wasn't crowded. The tour of the house was very interesting but we wish we'd packed a lunch to spend more time on the grounds. The views of the Hudson River were spectacular and the grounds are beautiful.

The Beauty which was created by this artist really is fascinating and well worth a look. The house itself is wonderful, however, the gorgeous fields and the spectacular views that surround it, make it even better! It's great for the whole family!

You wouldn't expect this piece of history to be sitting on the mountainside right by the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. But it's location is probably the best view of the entire area which is of course why it was chosen in the first place. Amazing structure and eclectic art collections from an era gone by. If you are passing through,... More
