While visiting the historical city of Ouidah, it is a must seen place to go to and see how the local religion cohabitated very well with those religions imported through colonization. This temple is full of pythons which are do not bit human beings and with whom you can play.
It is a must experienced element of Benin.

The temple site is very interesting and we enjoyed being given details of its background and the rituals and ceremonies still carried out there. It was interesting to learn about the pythons and get to hold one (they are clearly treasured by the temple and local people and are considered sacred). We heard the temple was very touristy (including from the Bradt Guide) and although we can see what is meant by that we still really enjoyed our visit and would recommend it to others.
(We visited with local English-speaking guide, Rémi Seglonou (recommended in the latest version of the Bradt Guide) who was also brilliant).

This Vatican of Voodoism is a good introduction to West Africa’s traditional religion. At the entrance they will ask you for an astronomical entry fee - that includes the Sacred Grove and the Door of No Return. Say you only want to visit the temple, and the price comes down to one-sixth. A young English-speaking guide is included in the fee.

They asked for 5000 CFA (price is 1000 CFA) I nipped that in the bud. There is a 5 minute tour, they put a small python around your neck you take your shoes off and go in a room with 25 small sleeping pythons. There is a 400 year-old baobab tree outside which was nice

The temple is rather small, but they do have a room full of snakes - I would estimate 30-40 pythons of various sizes.
You can safely take them in your hand and make the obligatory photos with the snake calmly resting on your neck (or in your hands).
Its definitely a must-see when you are in Ouidah!

If you want to visit Benin, then you must visit the Pythons Temple, Over 60 pythons housed and worshipped within the walls of this voodoo temple .

Sada and I visited the temple together with colleagues on a training visit and were impressed. Tour guides present on site have great knowledge of the religion and culture surrounding the worship. It's a cultural visit on a different level and a must for anyone coming to Benin with the desire to understand the spiritual experience of the peoples. Fascinating that the temple is located right opposite the Basilica, and its a shame that it's geographic location on the map is referenced directly to the Basilica.

Driving up to the temple is very interesting because it is right across the street from a Church. The history of the place as narrated by our guide Fostine is that the Snake worshipers have unique markings so you know the phyton people when you see them. There are about 3 gatekeepers before you enter but our guide had the juice and whisked us in. I am not really a snake person so am glad they were not slithering around when I entered the temple. It is in the true fashion of a mini-village worship area, and the snakes are tucked away in a little house. A snake was brought out for us by a priest to take pictures with I opted out but you can take your million dollar image with the python spirits if you so wish. I also pushed myself to go into the little house they live in and there are snakes everywhere so watch where you step. Overall a nice capture in the Voodoo Phyton people and their rituals. Benin is known to be one of the biggest Voodoo capitals of the world so if you are into the Voodoo that they do you need to go and visit. They also host one of the biggest Voodoo Festivals in the world.

This is an amazing place if you’re not afraid of snakes. The pythons are harmless. This is a religious site, and you can go inside the temple for some quality time with the pythons. Recommend.

There is really only one thing to see here, but the story of the snakes is fascinating. The guides do a good job of answering questions also.
