...however this huge historical landmark obviously does not receive the attention and respect it deserves! There are no real guides trained to accompany visitors (those available give very limited and approximate information) and there are no panels in the fort to complement the scarce information provided by guides. The place is impressing by its size and its historical meaning. For... More

The place is very interesting...Experience spoiled as the visit is not guided. You pay for the entry at the Governor's Palace and are lead to explore the Fort on your own.

Expansive structure that is a great relic of Portuguese rule. We had a guide from Ilha Blue who filled in all the facts. I recommend a guide or you have to fill in the blanks on your own. Good views from the top!

A huge place to spend time wandering around. We discoverecd the complex water collection system on the roof.

Our guide for Ilha showed us through Fort Sao Sebastian. Our guide was not affiliated with the Fort, I'm not sure how you tour the Fort on you own (or how to get a guide just for the Fort). There is a lot of dark history to the Fort. Hopefully with the UNESCO funding they can provide more details for... More

Imagine having an entire fort to yourself - scrambling up the stairs, hiding in rooms that seem to have been vacant for years, peering over the walls to the water crashing on the rocks below. You can't help but feel like an adventurer or kid at heart. Throw in the history and the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere... More

A fantastic piece of history that you can't miss if you visit the island! It is a majestic structure, so it is a shame to see it as a shell of its past glory. We hired a guide from the museum down the road, who showed us around and gave us basic facts, but I felt like his presentation was... More

If you want to do something off the beaten path where crowds NEVER exist, then you need to see this fort and explore it. Personally, I would do a self guided tour and explore on your own. You could spend hours and it's a blast.

A walk through the fortress grounds brings interesting insights into the history of the Portuguese on the island. Impressive array of cannons and buildings, and don't miss the large cistern building, still filling with water.

A must do when walking around this magical island. Well keept, some restaurations ongoing, and with a good guide you will enjoy this as a part of your trip around the island.
