About
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is a groundbreaking museum that reveals authentic stories of Underground Railroad freedom seekers and abolitionists in Niagara Falls. Located inside the former 1863 U.S. Custom House attached to the Niagara Falls Amtrak Station, the 'One More Rive to Cross' permanent exhibition features the rich stories of the Underground Railroad in Niagara Falls, the crucial role played by its location and geography, and the actions of its residents & particularly its African American residents. Visitors experience stories about Harriet Tubman along with Niagara Falls heroes of the Underground Railroad like John Morrison. Connecting past to present, the exhibition inspires visitors to recognize modern injustices that stem from slavery and to take action toward an equitable society. This museum is very small. It's located inside the Amtrak station, and you use that door to enter. However, it is absolutely beautifully done and packs a ton of information into its small footprint. The displays are brilliant and truly help this part of history come alive. It's considered an experiential museum; for example you can stand on a replica of the suspension bridge that people escaped to Canada on. The bridge is marked with the international line and there is audio of footfalls across the bridge at intervals. All of the separate sections are just as well detailed and creatively designed. My teen especially appreciated the final area that covers current day issues that connect us with this time. I would not visit this area again without coming here. it was truly an excellent experience.

This is a MUST VISIT Museum! I recommend it to everyone planning a trip to Niagara Falls - whether the visit is on the US side or Canada. The history of this community is important to understanding the fight and flight to freedom from slavery in the U.S.

The museum brings to life the important role that Niagara Falls, NY and its community of former slaves and abolitionists played in the success of the Underground Railroad. Our tour guide Jasiah was EXCEPTIONAL as she educated and engaged all in our tour group. The journey through the museum introduced me to heroic individuals whose names and courageous actions have been untold.

I am so very pleased that my family and I made this museum a part of our Niagara Falls experience. If you are traveling to/from a visit to the Falls, I recommend you include a visit to the museum on your agenda. You will leave enlightened and inspired by the knowledge of those who came before us.

A very special thanks to the leadership and staff of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center!

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad museum was a planned trip from a top list of things to do in Buffalo. The museum is a well planned and well laid out museum that can be done without a guide if necessary. Suggest to go when guides are available at 11:30am & 2:00pm which make the experience even better with more stories and details about the various different people shown in the museum. Well worth the trip to Niagara Falls to visit this nice museum.

A small but mighty center, well appointed with two daily guided talks that is included with the modest admission fee. The entry was $10pp when we went in June2022.

Both gentlemen were happily engaged in sharing information about the center, kind and enthusiastic in guiding our learning.

A must stop and see, and this is right on the free Discover Niagara Falls shuttle route.

This museum/heritage center is pretty small, and you can see it all in an hour. It's an easy stop to add on if you're going to the falls.

When we arrived, there was plenty of parking in the large lot. We checked out the mural art on the street, and then went into the museum. There is an entrance fee.

The museum is unique in that it tells the story of people instead of just showing objects. Definitely stop to watch the videos! We learned a lot about freedom seekers, and I think it's really worth the stop.

Tour Guide Matt was a refreshing blast of knowledge. He made the tour interesting, exciting and heartfelt. He was engaging and provided us a plethora of history how Niagara Falls, Cataract House, The suspension Bridge, the stairs, Harriet Tubman and many other unnamed conductors, warriors and courageous slaves and free slaves strategically, unitedly made it through the Underground Railroad. The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center provides facts, real stories, hotel registries and has a beautiful shop with items for lasting memories. When in Niagara Falls please take the time to visit this black history gem on the plight of Harriet Tubman and all those who went through the Underground Railroad and how it ties into modern day times. You will be surprised on what you find out. Extremely enlightening!

I really enjoyed learning about the history of Niagara Falls, the underground railroad and the Cataract House. The tour guide did a wonderful job of painting the story and I was able to visualize and stand in the actual place our ancestors stood while seeking freedom. Very creative museum exhibit. I was very impressed with the animations and the replicated Cataract House dining room area.

Very informative presentation of American history. The history of the Niagra Falls area of aiding slaves to freedom was well documented and displayed. Take time to watch the videos and listen to the stories told throughout the museum.

I could not tell you one particular part I liked, because I loved everything our tour guide Matt did, he was very very informative. He was funny, exciting and very fun to be around. He took his time explaining things and allowed us to ask questions. Marr even suggested a nice family restaurant for us, (Simply Soul) the food was absolutely delicious. If you want to know history, let Matt give you the tour, you will learn alot

Visiting was an absolute must since we are frequently in this area and both are quite interested in this period of history.
I was thrilled to discover ample, free and easy parking next to the museum The building was attractive and impressive. The exhibits were informative and very well done. But the small exhibit area left me craving more and hoping that, perhaps, one day the collection will expand. Although I know quite a bit about this period, I did pick up some additional and interesting facts.
Our biggest disappoint was that there was no tour available on the day we visited although we specifically timed our arrival just for that tour. I no longer remember the reason. There may have been some sort of staff meeting taking place. A knowledgeable guide probably would have left us feeling more fulfilled. But I have absolutely no regrets that I was able to visit.
