We visited this place during a week of hiking. The contrast when compared to the desert-like on the other side of the island is immense: this valley is green with sugar cane and coffee plantations. Also has wonderful old Trapiche where you can see the traditional way of making grogue.

Of the more accessible places of Santo Antão the three most worthwhile places to visit are the coastal area near the village of Fontainhas (reachable from Ponta do Sol), the Cova de Paul crater with the nearby Pico da Cruz and the valley of Paúl itself. The last two can be combined by a great, but partly steep walk. If... More

The trek isn't difficult if you start from the top, but your legs will feel it the day after, depending on how fit you are. The views are amazing and you go through several villages which have several plantations, both at the top in the Paul crater and while going down to Paul/Vila das Pombas. We stopped for lunch along... More

We were dropped off by the minibus at the top and walked all the way down to the coast. It is a long and steep walk down, but relatively safe, and very rewarding with the views as you go down. The valley is very fertile and intensively cultivated by the locals, and you have to admire their efforts in making... More

The Valley of Paul (Vale do Paul in Portuguese) is the most amazing sight on the island. Most of Santo Antao is dry, virtually a desert, but there are some valleys which are green year round. Among them, Vale do Paul is the most densely populated and the most fertile. During a walk one can see sugar cane plantations interspersed... More

Very different from the rest of Cape Verde, this valley offers great hiking opportunities, pretty steep but well worth the climb. Locals are very welcoming and will help you find the way (which really adds to the experience).

The scenery is simply breathtaking and was a highlight of our tour of the islands. I can see why our guide left Santo Antao and, in particular, the Paul Tal to the end of our fortnight's holiday. We drove around the valley enjoying the magnificent views on our first day. The next day we got a driver to take us... More

I came here briefly as part of a round-the-island day trip and wished I could have stayed longer to wander and take proper photos. What a gorgeous valley. Ramblers were walking at their leisure through the tiny little villages. One of the sights I liked most was the occasional washing lines with multi-coloured clothes, it's a sight that sums up... We walked down the valley from the Cova crater over a high ridge. The descent is over a paved path which is meandering downhill. Depending on how many clouds or fog are obstructing the view, you are getting a magnificent impression of this beautiful valley. We walked down to Casa Cavoquino, but the whole hiking tourwill lead to Vilas das... More
