- Mairwen1United Kingdom11,162 contributionsStunning Views But Tricky to FindThere are something like 450 churches and chapels throughout Santorini but the Three Bells of Fira is one of the best. If you only see one church, make it this one. Located along the walking trail between Fira and Firostefani, it’s very easy to get to. If you are doing the Fira - Oia Hiking Trail, you’ll walk right past it. However, what you see from the path is not the famous Instagram image. You can’t see the stunning blue dome or the white bellcote from here. All you see is the relatively unexciting cream coloured facade. In fact I nearly walked past without realising that this was the famous Three Bells church. To get the very popular shot of the bells and the dome’s silhouette against the Aegean Sea, you have to follow a slightly roundabout path up to a viewing point at the back of the church. It’s not obvious where to go at first. However there is a sign next to the church’s front gate. I’d recommend taking a photo of this before you head off. To get there, keep walking along the path towards Firostefani, and you will come to a Greek restaurant, Mama Thira. Take the staircase beside Mama Thira, then head around to the right, climbing up to a small car park above the church. It’s a short walk and takes less than 5 minutes. Some signs will start to appear after Mama Thira’s. These are not formal or offical signposts but look more like A4 size sheets of paper and are randomly stuck randomly on to walls along the way. It’s worth noting that the church may appear on a map under one of its official names, the Catholic Church of the Dormition or the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Greek name is Koimisi Tis Theotokou.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 7, 2023
- JJJourneysSingapore, Singapore2,508 contributionsIconic viewpoint in FiraThis iconic viewpoint is a must-see when in Fira, Santorini! It is along the famed hiking trail from Fira to Oia; look out for a whiteish coloured flight of steps just next to Mama Thira Tavern, you should also see a small parking space. Head up the flight of steps and turn right, you should see Santorini Palace ahead of you (on the left). Head up the slope to another small parking space and you should see the iconic blue dome and three bells just ahead. You can also walk along the main street in Fira (comparatively lesser steps than the hiking trail); I landed up in Firostefani and backtracked to the three bells from there. I visited the area in October, and think that the afternoon sun (past noon) will work best in terms of lighting for good pictures of the dome and bells. I tried the morning sun (you get a bit of shadow from the dome), and setting evening sun, which is the worst because you get the backlight.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 29, 2023

There is a great view of the water below, the volcano and the west coast of Santorini. There are a couple of benches in the area too if you want to take a quick break. There is signage which leads you to the viewpoint so you can see the blue dome and three bells which is a postcard view. There are some statues of pigeons in fun positions nearby and when I visited I met a very photogenic cat.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024

We were staying near Fira so we walked around the town several times and saw this 18th century Catholic church. It was closed , we coludn’t go inside. It's worth looking for photo points and taking photos from there.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 3, 2024

Lovely view of the blue-painted church dome and its three iconic bells overlooking the Caldera, the other islands and Oia in the distance. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the main part of Fira along the coast side. The steps you have to take to go up to it from the coastal path are clearly indicated on signs. There were other people there around 3pm in September, but it wasn't over crowded. There's also a parking lot right above it too with plenty of space to "take the best photo." Just under and on both sides of the church, there are a few restaurants with amazing terraces and views.

Yes 100% you will wait unless it late at night. That being said who doesn’t want their picture taken on the google image of Santorini? Their is a reason for the line and why every gift shop and attest uses this image to sell product. We did it and waiting for 15-20 min max it was hot but small price to pay

The three bells of Fira are one of the iconic landmarks in Santorini - everyone visiting here has to get a picture with the three bells and the blue dome.
The areas to get here and walkways in the towns are crowded.
There is a restaurant on the side of which you will have to climb to get to the back of the bells to get your picture perfect postcard pic of Santorini.
Good stop for getting your Santorini picture.
Overall, if taken the time - its a great spot to take a beautiful photo just of the landscape.

We took a trip to the village of Oia on the island of Santorini during a one day stopover on our cruise ship on a Monday in June, we was on an organised coach trip. The village of Oia appears in most of the publicity material for Santorini and the ‘Three Bells of Fira’ is probably the classic view.
On the day of our visit, there were two cruise ships in the harbour including our own and so Oia was fairly busy with tourists. The village sits on the edge of the cliffs and almost cascades down the cliffside towards the sea. Narrow streets run along the top of the cliff edge and from these lead the small passageways from which you will gain the views over the whitewashed buildings with their blue domed roofs.
It is worth trying a number of these if you are looking for the classic views either to just enjoy or photograph, though the one containing the three bells was particularly busy as might be expected. Be patient and you will get that memorable shot!

Hiked up from lower village, stood with the mass of tourists in the square in front of the church until most of their tour groups moved on. Snapped the requisite photos, checked to make sure I got several good ones and then moved on as well! Not much has changed since the last time we were in Fira with the noted exception that there 5, yes 5 large cruise ships anchored in the caldera having dispatched as many as 10,000 tourists onto the island so yes, it was mobbed!!!! Definitely detracts from what undoubtedly is one of the more beautifully stunning islands in the Med. Oh well we have our photos whenever we want to revisit!!!!!

Ideal place for photos, especially for instagram.
Make the most of all the colors that surround you. Autumn is ideal for outdoor photography, because nature is becoming more beautiful, there is more light, but at the same time it is not as hot as in summer.

Impressive chapel which offers an amazing view on the surrounding area. My wife, little sons (11 months and 3 years old) were exploring Fira in July. As it's quite hot in July, the stroll in Fira with two little kids is definitely challenging (a lot of stairs) and you should be equipped with good shoes and sufficient water (at least during the hot months). Three Bells of Fira was one of the best spots in Fira as it offers a nice view on both Fira and the volcano. From our point of view definitely a must-see when you're visiting Santorini respectively Fira.

Hi, Doreen. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Written July 1, 2018
If you start walking upwards toward Oia from Fira, the church is on your right as you start your ascent. The three bells can be seen from the main road itself if that's what you mean. You don't need to actually enter the church to spot them.
