Mount Hope, dedicated in 1838, is America's first municipal Victorian Cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery contains priceless pieces of art and rare horticultural specimens. It is the final resting place of many dignified and internationally known individuals, including Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, and is on the National Park Services National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mount Hope is listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District, featuring 83 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in the Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, a Victorian Gothic gatehouse, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres.

It's a beautiful place especially in the fall with the colors. It's quite the experience to visit Susan B. Anthony's grave on election day.

Beautiful, and interesting both geologically and historically. Burial place of Susan B. Anthony and many of her family.

I've been to the Cemetery several times both as a teacher with school groups and to visit Susan B's grave on election day. The staff and docents are full of knowledge and willing to help out answering questions and directing you so you can make the most of your time there. I learn something new every time I go!

I live nearby and go running there frequently. Don't miss this wonderful place! Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are buried there. There are many other interesting sights as well, including wonderful memorials to firefighters (including their horses and dogs) and armed forces.

12,000 years ago, what is now Rochester, NY^ was under more than a mile of glacier ice. As it melted and withdrew it left behind a dazzling array of moraines, eskers, and drumlins that eventually became the 200 acre muncipal cemetery in 1838, and is the oldest existing Victorian Cemetery in the nation. Among its rolling hills and woodlands are... More

We had a little time to kill and we're staying near Mt. Hope. I grew up in Rochester and I'm not sure I'd ever been in the cemetery. I've been all around the outside and I don't think I realized how huge it is. It's enormous - you can spend a little or a lot of time inside. You also... More
