You can park anywhere inside the park and jump in on one of the trails. They also have the spa, tennis courts, golf course and I believe a swimming area and other amenities. We were just passing through Saratoga and decided to stop to try some of the springs. I wish they had more maps available because it was a bit difficult to figure out where we were in relation to the springs but after spending sometime on my phone searching we were able to figure it out. We didn’t have a lot of time to walk the full walking trail to try all the springs, but we parked in parking lot “E” and were able to try 6 different mineral springs as they were all in similar locations, we did 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10. On my phone I pulled up a little snit bit of each of the springs and what they taste like. Make sure you bring your cup to taste try all the different mineral springs such a fun experience to share!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 8, 2024

There was no rain and we did have bug spray because the mosquitoes 🦟 and bees 🐝 can be annoying. There is a place to try the “waters” that made Saratoga a destination place for a hundred years. But, we careful & not drink too much or you will be spending too much time in the bathroom. The Auto museum is wonderful but does have an admission fee. The Roosevelt Baths is wonderful. A massage here is relaxing and you will feel like you are a member of the “Gilded Age”. Visit the Gideon Putnam Hotel for a glimpse into a beautiful old hotel. We relaxed in the lobby in the late afternoon. We saw the staff finishing up after a wedding ceremony and brunch in one of the banquet rooms. The desk staff were very helpful answering our questions. We walked along the many parks. There is also a beautiful pool called the Victoria Pool that is free if you are staying at the Gideon Putnam. Otherwise, there is a charge. Too bad almost every thing within the park was closed with the exception of the golf course and the Automobile Museum which was wonderful to visit. It’s small but for a car racing enthusiast there is a lot to see Also cars of the early years such as a Model A ford car and truck. The Pierce Arrow was spectacular. Lots of videos of Glens Falls races and other good stuff. If this museum is representative of the other museums on the grounds, they must be a joy to see. Too bad the Pandemic curtailed so much. You can spend time walking the paths or find one of the hiking trails. It’s a phenomenal facility.

This is a very large and beautiful park. The Visitor Center and museums were closed because of the virus, but the trails and restrooms were open. We walked the five mile trail which was well marked and easy. Admission is $10 per car, but parking for the trailhead is located before the pay station.

Saratoga Springs is known for several things: its mineral springs, the Saratoga Race Course for its thoroughbred horse racing track, and its Performing Arts Center. With the city slogan of “Health, History, and Horses,” it’s understandable that their welcoming sign would be a man on a horse with fountains behind it.
We were there in late September, so much of the horse attractions were closed for the season, and besides our interests did not lay there. Today our destination was the Saratoga Springs Spa State Park, but only a small part of its 2,379 acres. Within that small area of interest were the mineral springs. We entered one of the many entrances to the park, found a parking spot near the center and started out walking to find some of the many places where water naturally comes out of the earth.
It was the Mohawk tribes who were attracted to this land for hunting, because they believed the springs had healing powers. In the mid-1800s, Saratoga became popularly known as a health destination with many bathhouses and mineral spas that are still open to the public. There are eighteen public mineral springs in town. Some of the smaller tufa springs, and one mineral geyser can be seen by walking the half-mile trail along Geyser Creek. Early carbonated soda companies capped off some of these waters for their flavored bottled sodas, but were eventually shut down, due to their overuse, causing the geysers to cease flowing. Only years after the soda companies went away, did the waters return.
There are many lovely spots to sit and look out at the central lake. A bear statue is there, though no live bears are anywhere around anymore. Our first fountain, which was really no more than a trickle, had water that was bright red, due to its iron content. Across the road was an outlet where that same spring ran out, like rivulets of blood.
Most “geysers” are small that spit up or spit out. We followed the trail this rivulet took all the way to the creek, where the water spilled over a cement dyke. Geyser Creek runs through the park and since it had been raining, it was running pretty high and wide. A half-mile path along one side of the creek had many walkers and joggers.
Some of the springs are red, some orange, brown, and others yellow. Some have no scent and others smell strongly of sulphur. Walking the path, we came to the Orenda Spring Tufa, a multicolored mound
of mineral deposits that shoots up mineral water in the middle of Geyser Creek.
At another end of the state park is a sculpture garden with fountains. Two looked of interest: one of the four Greek caryatids, and another of two mermen eternally spitting out water from two marble conch shells, called Spit and Spat. Be sure and visit this park and spend the day exploring its many wonders.

Our experience at Saratoga Spa State Park was very nice and peaceful, and we would definitely recommend stopping at this amazing place. The park was very well kept and the scenery inside the park was incredible. The view of the spring was very pretty and the trails here are very nice and organized. Overall this park is a great place to walk, bike, and swim and is a great location for all occasions.

A beautiful drive through a gorgeous NY State park. We were fortunate enough to witness a band that was rehearsing for a Flag Day parade and we remarked that it was a perfect place for a rehearsal. The park has a multitude of pavilions for family and friends picnics. People were relaxing stream side with a good book. This is a very dog-friendly place. We tasted three of the springs, and they weren't to our taste, but we very much enjoyed being in the beautiful park in gorgeous weather.

It’s cool to learn about the healing properties of the geysers all around the park. There is a nice picnic area, with a trail along a small creek. In 1930, they started to build the pavilions to attract visitors to the healing waters. The designs were based on spas in Europe. You can still take the waters at the Roosevelt baths, with a large offering of baths, massages and other curative treatments. There’s a big pool that you can use free once you’ve paid the park entrance fee. Dogs are allowed, so bring your pooch,and enjoy the grounds.

We'd been driving quite a while and needed to stretch our legs in Saratoga Springs. This state park was a great place. It's quite large, so you really get a sense of being in nature. They have many facilities and trails. We didn't know what the "Springs" referred to and the information signs were great at explaining the fascinating history here. Glad they were able to preserve the unique geology.

Nice Park , no bathrooms due to covid 19...People going bathroom in woods, no hand washing after and paper litter found. Misguided policy by State ...What are those mployees doing now since bathrooms are closed?? Some Park areas neglected....around Coesa Lake its a mess right now..Signs of mismanagement!

We really loved checking out the many springs in the park and tasting the differences.
Wished we would have known they give tours of the springs starting after Memorial Day. You need to call the park and arrange before you go. Also you could golf there they have a huge golf course. They have a hotel on the grounds too. The Roosevelt spa is open and you can still make appointments to soak in a tub of hot mineral spring water. The grounds were amazing with trails and picnic areas. You could just spend the day there.

I don’t know if there are tours. There is a helpful office and they provide a brochure with information and a hiking map.

What is this area like at the end of April or early May? I have heard of this destination for horse races and concerts but wondering if this is too early for a NY place? Will shops, museums, parks, etc be open?

Sorry, I forgot you asked about shops and museums. There are several shops and restaurants to enjoy as well as museums to visit - available year round. Don't forget to visit the State Museum in Albany - about an hour away.

You can push a stroller for 10 miles around the park if you want. It would be a little difficult to push a stroller in the pool however.
