I love trains. Anywhere that there is a restored and operating train line, my husband and I will check it out. We've said for years that we wanted to do the Catskill Mt Scenic Railroad from Mt Tremper, but never found the time. This weekend we finally bought tickets, but it was leaving from Kingston. What?...from Kingston?...and we're going to ride through the scenic Catskills? Well, I thought perhaps the train would move quickly to get there since the whole ride is only an hour and a half. Forget it! What a disappointment! The train moves v-e-r-y slowly through parking lots, shopping centers, and a hotel. There is a lot of trash along the tracks that should be removed including piles of old RR ties. A really bad first impression. And every time it came to a road crossing it had to stop to let guys off to step into the road and stop traffic. Then, we stopped multiple times because of downed trees across the tracks that the chainsaw guy had to cut away. WHY WOULDN'T YOU CHECK THAT BEFORE THE TRIPS BEGIN?? My suggestion, if you still want to go after reading all the bad reviews, is don't buy tickets for the first ride of the day. Anyway, when we finally reach a wooded area (and Route 28 is always alonside the tracks) we moved to the other side of the train to at least see trees. There was no narration to explain the former use of the line, how old is the locomotive, history, nothing. The volunteers were very nice, so I had high hopes before the train departed. But this organization needs more than nice people to be successful. Bad reviews will eventually eat you alive.

We had 3 kids under 10 years of age and they somewhat enjoyed this summer train ride in the open carriages. The views were ok and that is being generous. As for my wife and I, this is a complete dud and not worth the money. No information on the train, the route or its history. No destination. You slowly go out a few miles from Kingston, you stop and head back seeing the blah scenery a second time. Thankfully it lasted just an hour. Not worth the money charged.

Went to the Catskills Polar Express with my 6 year son a 4 year old daughter and a 10 year old nephew. Inside the train was like an old LIRR. They really enjoyed the hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookie and the song Hot Hot while it was being served. My son brought is copy of the polar express and read along while they went up and down the aisle with the book. Santa came and sat down with us. Overall great experience.

My family joined my brother’s family. It was their second time and our first on The Polar Express. We love Christmas and I couldn’t pass up seeing the joy in my 9 year old niece’s eyes as the train pulled up. My kids are adults but have wonderful memories from when the movie came out. The train was beautifully decorated. They encourage you to wear your pajamas just like the kids from the movie which we did. When you enter the car it’s to the music from the movie. Absolutely magical. The conductor punched our special tickets with our first initial. The “hot chocolate chefs” were wonderful and engaging with the children. They handed out hot chocolate and cookies. The recorded audio book was read by the author over the loud speaker with the staff walking around with the giant copies to show the kids the pictures. They played games with the children while Christmas music played. At the “North Pole” Santa (who really took his time with everyone) boarded with his elves and greeted the children and gave everyone the first Christmas gift of the season...the bell. I just got off the train and I can’t wait to do it again next year!

Catskill Mountain Railroad is a nice trip during fall foliage. Trip is just over an hour long and I enjoyed it.
