For blocks around this park there are many older buildings. Parking is easy along the streets, and you don't have to walk far to see a lot of interesting architecture.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten November 10, 2023

You can see the original walls along the sides of the canal in the center. Be sure to pick up the walking tour brochure at the Erie Canal Museum to learn more about the beautiful and historic buildings dotting the blocks surrounding the square.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 13, 2024
- Ginger B ROswego, New York534 contributionsAlways something going onIf there's a festival in Syracuse, chances are it's in Clinton Square. Been to Irish Fest, Italian Fest, Taste of Syracuse to name a few. I find parking and getting in and out of Syracuse very easy. It's a pretty drivable little city. There are some great bars in the area as well. And some lovely architectureVisited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 26, 2024

The monument was the solo reason for a visit. The monument was is dedicated to the 12,265 men of Onondaga County who served in the Civil War. Two bronze sculptures,'The Call To Arms'-east side-and 'An Incident At Gettysburg'-left side. The monument consist of a granite pylon with attached Roman ionic column at the corners that support a heavy cornic with a carved frieze and crowned by a 18-28 foot globe guarded by an eagle at each corner grasping a thick garland.
The north & south sides feature granite reliefs of flags & military accoutrments. The plith features dedicated plaques with a quotation from President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. The monument is approxmately 75 fee in height. The monument's corner stone was laid Memorial Day May 1, 1909 & dedicated June 21, 1910.
On both the east & west sides are three metal round tables with four chairs each, along with two trash cans. At the SW corner are four metal metal benches. In the same area is the Jerry Rescue Memorial dated October 1, 1851. William 'Jerry' Henry was an escaped slave from Missouri working as a cabinet & copper maker in Syracuse. On the October 1 date Jerry was apprehended & charged as a fugitive slave. That night a mob of Syracuse citizens-white & black stormed the city jail freeing Jerry to freedom and an escape to Kingston, Ontario by way of the Underground Railroad.
The fountain-which serves as a skating rink during the winter time-has arise & fall up to ten feet & ten seconds. Both the monument & memorial educational. The only drawback for a visit is a lack of parking. Probably most visitors will have little interest in either the monument & memorial, however a history buff might have an interest. A visit of any type is recommended.

It's very nice and relaxing; they always have activities especially during the summer. There are festivals, jazz nights and the Xmas tree is lighted up as a tradition.

These monuments were mostly errected during a time when America was proud of the part we played in fighting for the freedom of all. It's important to remember what our ancestors did

Clinton Square is the site where barges from the Erie Canal were loaded and unloaded, and the park design pays homage to that history with a reflecting pool where the canal once was. On Tuesdays from mid-June through mid-October there is an open-air farmers market in the Square, which is a welcome place for tourists to get some fresh produce as a break from eating in restaurants while on the road. The public square has two monuments. One is for the soldiers of the Civil War, and the other commemorateside the Jerry Rescue, an event when people from Syracuse rescued a fugitive slave from federal marshals and helped him get to Canada and freedom. The square is surrounded by historical buildings. Pick up a walking tour brochure at the Erie Canal Museum that covers historic Syracuse, including Clinton Square and the surrounding buildings.

Clinton Square represents the heart of Syracuse and contains the "Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument" surrounded by a fountain and shallow pool in the warmer months, which are replaced by an ice rink in winter.

There was a FRI evening event going on, people came out, there were food trucks, beers, some tent vendors selling things. The Syracuse folks know how to have enjoy themselves. Apparently, this is where the Erie Canal used to cut through town, but you wouldn't know it, it's paved over. Seriously! How foolish for the city elders to make that call. Now, there is nothing, save a few nice old historic buildings many of them have windows boarded up, vacant first floor storefronts. Syracuse needs a revival.

Clinton Square is lively in the summer when there are festivals and the fountain's up and running. It's lovely in the winter when there's a huge Christmas tree and the ice skating rink is set up. It's a good place to sit and relax during spring and fall, and a nice sight to see in the city.

Clinton Square is in the heart of Syracuse. In warmer months a fountain and shallow pool take the place of what is an ice rink in winter. The area is also home to various local festivals and festivities.
Here you will see the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (built in 1910), as well as the (amazingly still-standing) bank buildings that surrounded this square back in the day that it was a part of the Erie Canal.

Syracuse has its depressing parking lots and some unfortunate ugly-to mediocre "modern" buildings. BUT it is well worth the time for anyone who enjoys strolling around faded urban centers. There are many lovely buildings from the 19th and early 20th century. I spent an an hour or more both days that we were in town. If a Sunday check out some of the church interiors...I especially liked the small and charming Congregational church. I would recommend for their location the Syracuse Marriott or the Clinton Jefferson.

Safety nowadays is a relative question. Sometimes one is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But, with that said, I felt completely safe the day I was there on a late Friday morning. The people I met were friendly. One even saw me taking photos with a good quality camera, and he related to me where there was a large eagle statue. I never found the eagle statue, but I found other interesting things.
I am 73 years old, in relatively good health, and I carry no weapons, such as mace, a gun, or a knife. Yet, I felt perfectly safe in Clinton Square and the surrounding city blocks.
Just as a "heads up," I always watch people's eyes and hands if they are anywhere near me, where I would have cause for concern. The eyes and hands are "tells" that something is not quite right.
As I wandered around downtown Syracuse in the middle of the day that Friday, I saw no one that I would have reasonable concern to be worried about while they were near me. The people I met were friendly, and I saw no one that day that seemed to be a threat of any kind.
Is it safe? I would say yes, it's safe.
