About
The Everson is a museum of firsts. It was the first museum to dedicate itself to the collection of American art, to create a permanent collection of ceramics, to collect video art, to create a docent program and to hire the now internationally known architect I.M. Pei to design its building, a sculptural work of art in its own right. The Everson is home to more than 10,000 works of art: American paintings, sculpture, drawings, video, graphics and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation. Not only are there ever-changing exhibitions by intriguing artists, but classes, workshops, art camps for the kids, events such as the Festival of Trees & Light, performances by award-winning talent, unique social activities, community-inspired performances and events, and even an interactive cafe coming soon! So much to see, so much to do. The Everson Museum is located in downtown Syracuse, NY, right across from the Oncenter. We invite you to visit us soon! Thank you.

I would say this is a typical art museum for a town of this size. Nice building with room for a few exhibits. I see from a 4 year old review that they had a room filled with what they called a 'hodgepodge' of paintings. When I saw it, I thought the pamphlet said they were renovating the storage area and placed this pictures here instead of just moving them to another temporary storage area. Seems that is not the case. I actually just looked at the list of paintings for the names of any artist I recognized and found that one. There was a Granny Moses, an Andy Warhol, and a Grant Wood. There was also a painting of George Washington that looked familiar. So nice place and all, small gift shop with higher priced stuff that normal art store high prices I thought. There was almost no one in there when we went on a weekend making us think at first it was not open.
I was able to add a photo to my collection of pics of "is this art or just some stuff"

While the structure of the Everson Museum is well done, what it contains inside is sadly lacking. There was only one main room with some pottery, and another room that had a hodgepodge assembly of artwork. Lots of empty rooms, ripped signage on doors and hallways, very tired look and feel. The potential is there but it is in desperate need of a visionary, and better applied funding. Better to drive 45 minutes down the thruway and visit the Munson-William Proctor Art Institute. Beautifully maintained facility with well curated art collections.

This is a great place to spend a few hours and see some unusual art arranged in creative ways. Also if you are a fan of modern design the building itself is interesting. See the "Off the Rack" room. Could spend hours in there alone.

Thank you for visiting. We appreciate the kind words. The building was designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei and is a work of art in its own right. Many people visit the Everson just for the building and the spiral staircase in particular. We're glad you enjoyed Off the Rack, even as staff, we enjoy spending time in the galleries and see something new and interesting every time.. We have a a few new exhibitions on view now so I would encourage you to visit again! Thank you.

As a fan of the architect I.M. Pei, I had been waiting for the opportunity to visit the Everson Museum of Art that dates to the mid-1960s ! I had photographed the exterior a few years back, but had never been inside. Much of the gallery space was closed, but we were able to enjoy the great interior architectural elements in the atrium lobby...a circular staircase, textured cement walls, ceilings with recessed lighting inside cement squares, and other interesting features. Be sure to look up and look out!! We enjoyed the ceramics and pottery galleries as well as the Doug Muir photography exhibition and documentary video. So interesting!!

Touring the Pei building most memorable part of visit. Wonderful circulation and vistas. New acquisitions on display carried social justice themes. Messages had more merit than formal qualities.

I visited here last summer. It is not large, and doesn't take much time to look through. Has some interesting pieces. My favorite thing is the building itself, an IM Pei design. It's so unique and odd. The whole grounds around the museum are a nice place to wander around.

I liked the outside movies they have in the summer. I just wished they had more of them. Last year was my first time going and it was great time. Only thing I didn't like was the long walk to the rest room.

This truly is a GEM for this area. What a wonderful and educational visit this museum offers. We stop here when we are this way almost every time we can fit this into our schedule.

What a hidden Gem the Everson is, something many folks visiting to Syracuse may never have heard of or expected. The Everson is a pleasant museum that isn't too large but isn't tiny by any imagination, easily seen in a few hours features three floors of varying art. The main floor is mostly large sculptures and the gift shop with some small changing exhibits. The Upper level features four main galleries, two are permanent selections of the museum and the other two feature changing exhibits of national levels. The lower level features ceramics which is the heart of the museum and the pride as well. Thousands of pieces from ancient Greece to modern day are seen and many more are off exhibit at times. There is also a children's area with spots to color and mold with clay as well as learn about art in a fun way. Parking is free in the small lot next to the museum or you can pay for the lot across, easily located it sits in the heart of downtown near the ONcenter and War Memorial. The Building itself is a piece of art and was the first building designed by famous architect I.M. Pei.

I hadn’t visited the Everson Museum is two score years; since the wild-n-wooly heyday of Director Jim Harithas’ reign in the early 70s.
The wonderful physical structure by I.M. Pei still looks muscular and new but the mood inside has devolved from a haven for the avant-garde to a staid venue for old fogey exhibits.
From a Yoko Ono shock-fest retrospective in October 1971 to the show I saw in June titled “An American Look: Fashion, Decorative Arts & Gustav Stickley” are worlds apart aesthetically and sums up the changes the Everson has gone through philosophically.
We’ve all gotten older, but Everson’s switch to the staid depresses me.
That said, it does have a comprehensive and topnotch ceramics collection. Well worth seeing.
