Bird Watching Trip.
Feb. 2020
As a bird photographer, the Grasslands was on my must-see lists. We decided to take a long weekend to NY state during Valentine's to hopefully see the Short eared Owls and Northern Harriers. We stayed in a lovely B and B up the road and the first afternoon of our visit, we stopped by to suss it out. It was drizzly and grey and we were the only two there. We took our gear to the first bird blind and saw about 5-8 SEO and a few Harriers. We were delighted and looked forward to a great photographic opportunity during the next couple of days. The next days were sunny, but very cold and the owls were a no-show, or seen sparingly in the great distance. We were entertained by a beautiful male kestrel who was hunting, and eventually brought up a vole to eat on a post.

Grasslands is a beautiful place set in the most gorgeous country side. It was just so peaceful to be there. We enjoyed it.

On our last day, we ran into a gentleman who was on the board of the Grasslands and he asked us about our visit. We told him we saw a lot of SEO activity on the first night, but none really since then. He told us we were lucky as they have not been seen much for a least the last three weeks.

Between the wonderful stay in the BnB, we did enjoy our visit to Shawangun Grasslands! We definitely want to return again, maybe in the summertime for other meadow birds like Bobolinks and Meadow Larks.

Birds galore

We visit this old airport, now grassland, from time to time to watch birds. Don’t forget to take binoculars. A great place to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon.

Nice place to walk, appears to be an excellent place for bird watching

I walk here occasionally and each time see bird watchers who seem to be the most regular visitors here. They have a decent sized parking lot and keep the paths mowed. As always check for ticks after visiting a with any outdoor pursuit these days

February - Raptors and bluebirds
Feb. 2018 • Friends
Birding trip. Visited at 8 am on a February morning, and walked some of the trail. Lots of Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers (including Gray Ghosts) and a couple of Short-eared Owls. Ravens, Eastern Bluebirds. Check the feeder on the way in.
Has a comfort station!

Easy hike to see birds. Flat and well kept. Even a well kept rest room! Viewed our first Northern Harrier on first visit. Amazing, will return.

One of the best places to bird watch in the Hudson Valley
Jun. 2016 • Solo
Bring your binoculars or spotting scope to view many bird species that nest exclusively in grassland ecosystems. Bobolinks, grasshopper sparrows, meadowlarks and upland sandpipers are easily seen in June while endangered short eared owls are present in the winter. Quiet, peaceful place.

If you're into bird watching, this is a place that can't be missed. Known for Harriers, field birds and more, a wonderful, quiet place to wander and see what you kick up!

Depending on the time of year

I usually go during the winter or colder weather. I have better luck than. My trip this morning yielded only a few bird sightings and several deer sightings. At 7 AM the sunrise was beautiful and the air crisp. I could hear birds in the distance and saw a few Canadian Geese flying overhead.

I do recommend this location but check recent sightings. I also liked the new ramp and observation deck.
