About
Villa San Michele is the life’s work at Capri of the Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe (1857–1949). It is surrounded by an impressive garden, which recently won the price as Italy’s most beautiful private park. Behind it is the Barbarossa mountain, that Axel Munthe turned into a sanctuary for migratory birds. Axel Munthe recounts the story of his life and the creation of the villa in The Story of San Michele (1929). It became one of the first international bestsellers in modern time. The tale that then captivated countless readers all over the world, lives on in Villa San Michele, in its rooms and garden and in the Egyptian sphinx, that silently watches the sea from its balustrade.

- Anne CDumfries, United Kingdom232 contributionsA tranquil garden to visit when it's quiet.Beautiful Garden. The House is like a Monastery. Axel Munthe is an interesting philanthropic character - there's some notes about him on the display boards. The views are wonderful - however, on the day I was there, it was heavy cloud and rain. The website is also very interesting and there are some videos you can watch to get the story behind the creation of the Villa.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024
- TimWandMelGAustin, Texas327 contributionsIt's easy to see why Villa San Michele is one of the top attractions on CapriIt's easy to see why Villa San Michele is one of the top attractions on Capri. Located a short flat stroll outside of Anacapri along Via Capodimonte, Axl Munthe’s former home is a treasure. The gardens consisting of hundreds (thousands?) of different types of trees, bushes, shrubs and flowers is spectacular. We went in April and the colours were already an amazing riot of sights and smells. There’s also plenty of shade. The property is fabulous. No wonder Axl Munthe spent almost all of his adult life here. The architecture is beautiful and the views over the sea and of Marina Grande are fabulous. We did all the most recommended things. We saw the head of Medusa, the marble bust of Emperor Tiberius which once adorned the temple dedicated to Venus and Rome, the sacred Medieval art, Tuscan furnishings from the 1700s, Roman frescoes and statues, marble table decorated with Cosmatesque mosaics, Sicilian wrought iron lamp, and best of all the Egyptian sphinx, the symbol of Axel Munthe's residence, who looks out over the sea from his place of honour. It is believed that if you put your left hand on the sphinx, make a wish while looking out over the sea, the wish will come true. Did we put this to the test? Of course we did!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 22, 2024
- NaniReynella, Australia105 contributionsMake sure you allow time to enjoyThis is absolutely amazing and the only reason I didn’t rate it 5 is I was upset with the guy that we spoke to. We asked him if we could see everything in the 40 min that was left before closing and he said yes. There was a museum before you enter the garden.I believe it takes quite a bit longer than that especially if you like gardens. I felt I had to rush through to see it. I highly recommend that if you love gardens and museums do not go 30 min before it closes. Take at least an hour or more to relax and enjoy . I did express to him that I was disappointed but he didn’t seem to care as he received our money . I was dissatisfied with his attitude but the place was amazing.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2024

Fabulous villa.
Beautiful gardens.
Amazing views.
Interesting history.
Some exhibits are of interest. One or two are noteworthy. I suggest you linger by the millenia-old sphinx and look out across the bay from a viewpoint few will ever see. The Tenner entrance fee is worth this. An hours worth but small and very special.

Situated close the center of Anacapri, the villa and gardens of San Michelle make for a great visit. The house was built was Axel Munthe and there is a lot of history of the man and his life as you take a tour through the house. The outside gardens are lovely and have some great views. There is also a small cafe and giftshop to visit on your way out.

There are great reviews, but we chose not to go inside the actual villa. Based on some of the reviews from guide books I'd read, was not necessarily worth the price. We were able to walk to the end of the villa and admire the views from that location. It is right in Anacapri, so worth visiting if you're there.

This is one the highlights of Capri Tour. Situated a short walk from the centre of Anacapri, this piece of history is a must see. The restored villa of Alex Munthe is a sight to behold.
A guided tour of the villa is easy to take with signboards showing the way. You are treated to beautiful gardens, statues and pieces of art in the various rooms. A short flight of stairs takes you to a viewpoint with statues of sphinx overlooking a beautiful view of the sea.
Bought the book "Story of San Michele" from the bookstore located in the villa at the end of your tour

Though I heard many wonderful things about Capri, I was not overwhelmed by the island and, if it was not for Axel Munthe’s villa, I would have thought that the trip to the island was not worth the price. Of, course, I knew beforehand about the villa and its owner, having read “The Story of San Michele”. And the visit urged me to find the book and re-read it. The place is so full of atmosphere and even of the owners moods.

Michele villa was a welcome escape from 35 degree heat and the crowds of Anacapri. You take a pleasant walk through the shopping street to get here. Stop in the Limone shop for generous samples on the way. The house is charming and has spectacular views. It is also surrounded by public walks if you dont want to pay to see the house and gardens.
The gardens are so shady and tranquil.
There are toilet facilities in the grounds.
The Oliv cafe is perfectly situated in the grounds but can also be accessed independently. I recommend the lemon spritz and the amazing views.

If you're in Anacapri, why not? It's a lovely museum (and previously a private villa) which is something to think about. It's self guided with no interaction, which is nice. I think a little informatory leaflet or introduction from the ticket "charger" would have been nice. Maybe it'll be different post Covid? But the signage does tell the story, Overall a good experience and we had a beverage at the onsite cafe which is on a scenic terrace. A nice way to relax.

If I get a taxi from marina grande to the villa san Michele can I then walk to the chair lift then walk to Capri center ? Many thanks
Written October 1, 2018
You CAN walk back to capri center but better not to do it. I wouldn´t! Take a cab. It is just 18-20 euros and you certainly will not regret it (if you don´t mind the price), beacuse Capri taxis without roofs are so fun. The cheapest way is to go by buss but that is not a very pleasant expreriance, if it hot and the buss is full - and when they are full they are FULL.

Can you go walking from Anacapri to Villa San Michele? Or you must take a bus, or what? Thanx!
Written July 19, 2018
Its app. 15 min. from the bus stop in Anacapri. You can walk from there on a nice way to the Villa San Michele.

Vi vill efter 30 år återbesöka Capri, och då särskilt Villa San Michele i slutet av oktober i år . Tips om boenden i närheten, restauranter, cafeer?
Written July 16, 2018
What is the fee to get into the villa? Do I need a reservation?

Villa San Michelle is breataking! Don’t miss touring tar Munths home and gardens for $8 Euro. You enter through the art shop. It is worth every euro, the formal gardens and views are gorgeous, the home is full of so many artifacts and history. Make sure you tour the bird sanctuary!
There is a restaurant on the grounds of the home that is excellent, service is good, prices are good and the views are magnificent.my favorite place to have dined while in Italy. So peaceful and tranquil.
We stayed at a B& B called Casa Raiola.. 4 flight of stairs, no elevator, but so worth it.
Enjoy!

Ditto! A very nice stroll to get there, a few steps in the house and in the garden but nothing worth noting. Don't miss it!
