My wife took one look at the hill and decided to stay in the car. I decided that I'd brave the incline to the lookout above. Easier than I thought, a gentle incline with a couple of switchbacks and some strategically placed bench seats. Great views over the pit and the water at the base. Plenty of activity and dust clouds further afield with mining in progress. The lookout has a series of very good interpretative signs on the mining industry in Greenbushes. Worth a short detour if driving the Southwest Highway.

Greenbushes Mine Site, Western Australia

Although the former open cast mining site is no longer a working pit, there is an excellent viewing platform easily accessible by walking a short distance from the town centre or driving to adjacent parking.

There is gradual slope access which could be navigated by those handicapped or in a wheelchair.

Clear explanatory panels explain the history of the site and what is currently taking place nearby at underground sites, mostly connected with the extraction of lithium and tantalum

Good views of the old mine but the new working pits are obscured from the viewing platform. Very informative information boards are positioned around the viewing platform explaining the history of the mine and the types of minerals that are extracted from the pits.

I had no idea there was mining here.
Interesting read of all the information about the old and current mining activities. Only here for 2 days, but have to come back as there is so much more.

Take the time to take this lovely walk up to the mine pit at Greenbushes. You can see the excavation here and into the distance with a beautiful pool of blue water at the base. They have some really great information in the viewing platform about the mine and its history.
Just a side note - parents should be teaching their children to respect their surroundings, came across 2 young boys digging away at the track (putting rocks on the track itself) and then sliding through the bushes breaking small shrubs etc - parents were absolutely oblivious and gave me a dirty look when I asked these kids to stop what they were doing.

Lovely big signs advising of history and information about the mine. didn't realise we had lithium mines in Western Australia. Bit of a walk to the platform if you have trouble walking but there is a ramp.

So worth seeing this huge mine site..
The look out is designed with such a great view of the mine.
It truely is breath taking and I now have a better understanding of what my husband is doing and how hard they work at the mine site..
All the information about the site and area is up on display at The lookout....
So much to see and do in Greenbushes..A beautiful place to explore....

Interesting coming from a Gold Mining town of Kalgoorlie that Greenbushes has been a powerhouse of the mining industry for years. Very well presented and prepared site to visit. Like the attention to the sloping approach making access easy, information presented is excellent. Worth 15 free minutes when passing by.
