Located in the spectacular Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, just 45 minutes south of Perth is Penguin Island- a beautiful, unspoilt nature reserve home to WA's largest colony of little penguin as well as dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans, ospreys and more. Visitors can see the penguins being fed by rangers at the Discovery Centre. It's also fantastic for swimming, snorkelling, having a picnic or just enjoying some of the best coastal scenery in Perth. Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island (it's only a 5 minute ride), glass bottom boat cruises of Shoalwater Bay and adventure style cruises to watch the local dolphins and explore more of the marine park. Sea Kayak Tours and Kite boarding Lessons are also available.

Nice island for relaxation. Lots of seagulls but where are the penguin? Avoid school holidays. You have to go by ferry. Used to be able to walk across during low tide but not anymore.

Hi Tkk08, Thank you for your review! About 1000 Little Penguins are calling Penguin Island home. During daylight hours though, Little Penguins are foraging for food. They can be spotted during the day - if you are patient, quiet and have good eyes, it is likely that you will spot one hiding, waiting for mum and dad to come back.... More

I chose to tread from shoalwater in the water to Penguin Island. I have done this once before years ago. Best to try this when the tide is low and the water is dead calm in the morning on a summers day. I think getting to Penguin Island this way adds to the experience. You can get over to the... More

The penguin discovery centre is manned by some knowledgeable staff and there are certainly enough walking you can do on the island. the water is beautiful to swim in and when it is safe you can cross via the sandbar. Just a warning...Unless you pay the fee to visit the sanctuary to see the penguins you are very unlikely to see any penguins in the wild .They are either out swimming for fish or in the breeding boxes in the bush which are out of bounds to visitors There are many birds flying around ..terns and many pelicans and pigeons... Hi Allan M, Thank you for your review, Penguin Island is home to over 1200 wild little penguins and their natural behavior is to go out fishing out at sea during the day and come back to the island at sunset. Penguin island is a great fun day out especially if you go as part of a tour. We did the dolphin tour and were amazed at how many dolphins we saw. You need to bring your own food and also bring a bag to ensure that all of your rubbish is brought back. Beach is beautiful.
