Kingstown is the first bus stop on the bus route around the island, and Kingstown Barracks is a short walk from the bus stop.

Whilst the barracks is now used for accommodation, this place is not just about the accommodation, but also about the history in this area.

Take your time to check out the history, and well placed information boards around the area. It won’t take long, and is interesting to see.

We stayed 4 nights in a family room at Kingstown Barracks and we were very impressed! At such a bargain price, we did have lower expectations but these were exceeded. We found the Barracks very quiet (only two or three other rooms were occupied) so if you are coming for company then you might be disappointed but our kids were happy to roam free range with no worry of disturbing other guests.
Despite the wet weather we explored the island in the dry spells, enjoyed the movie cinema, coffee in the park and the pub!
The room was well set up with large king size bed (two singles zipped together for mum and dad) plus bunks. Beds had two woolen blankets each. We were warm enough except on the last night so we wished we had brought our little fan heater or hired one. I wish the barracks had the same warmer doonas that you get in the unit accommodations.
Gripes- we found the verandah light shone straight through the unshaded window above the door and we ended up taping some newspaper to block the light!
Tips and “must brings”- a bath mat as they are not provided, puzzles and games, books. If self catering- All your own food needs as nothing extra provided- eg salt and pepper, oil, foil, paper towel.
Bikes for sure or you are faced with a walk to town or waiting for the bus twice per hour.
Overall, with a little organization and prep this was a fantastic bargain break with the family!

We stayed at Kingston Barracks overnight this week. We had a bedroom to ourselves which contained a great King bed, and two bunks. Shared toilet/shower was just next door. Our room was in a very quiet block. The breakfast option in the cafe was basic but perfect, and the very quiet beach just near the Barracks was beautiful, and at Rottnest, rarely quiet. If you are a couple and want to stay one or two nights at Rotto Kingstown Barracks are a perfect option.

Okay well first of all no power things. Thanks a lot my phones about to die :( the water tasted horrendous and I almost vomited because of it. The beds are the creakiest things ever and thanks to the lawn, the boys played cricket 24/7 and badly too. I’m glad I didn’t have to stay more than one night.

We loved staying here. We had a family room, all bedding provided. Ferry delivers your bag there. We could cycle into 'town' easily. They had BBQ & kitchen facilities if you needed that. Quokkas by the dozen on the lawn after sunset. Good stroll to beach for star gazing. Relaxed place - remember to check in at visitor centre - we forgot!

A 1.5 pleasant walk from town or catch the free accommodation transfer bus. Accommodation includes backpacker dorms, family units, individual units, facilities tidy. Dorm beds pricey but inexpensive compared to other Rottnest accommodation. No alcohol allowed. Very little written information about its use as a barracks, you need to go around the barracks and read varous signs and maps to get a sense of how it was used. Close to the water for swimming. Need to book accommodation on line. Very quiet the weekend I stayed. Great for school parties and other large groups. I believe guided tours are available.

Have a look, this is a barracks built before WW2, walk the beach and enjoy the surrounds, just out of town.

Pretty convenient spot to stay a few nights if visiting Rottnest Island for the week. Cheap and easy, but also a fair bit of history about the place so it's worth wandering around here for an hour or so even if you don't stay.

We had a group of 10 ladies and got the Barracks 152 house which is on top of hill. Nicely tucked away and short walk down to beach for a quick dip and walk along on a nice summers day.
