We booked this excursion about a month and a half in advance, and judging from the crowd, I'd suggest doing the same thing. A short preface to explain the ride: This ride is based on the book and movie "The Polar Express". In the book,...More

Trip was a little pricey, but we had a great time! Inclement weather made the open air gondola less enjoyable, but we made the best of it! Lunch was good, guide was amusing, and scenery was beautiful!

Except most of the trees were still green. Disappointing, as this was the main reason we booked this ride. Steven the server was wonderful....very knowledgeable of the area and our pulled pork lunch was very good.

We are a retired couple looking for a fun activity, fairly close to home (it's about a 2 hour journey for us). The great Smoky Mountains Railroad is a very well organized activity, and offers several different levels of experience for different price ranges. We...More

Don't book the train/hotel package. If you have to cancel, they will charge you $6.00 a night for cancelling the hotel, even if it is 24 hours in advance. If you book them separately, you can cancel the hotel without charge. It is just a...More

I think the left side of the train. We were in the first class shine and dine. If you are not into that i would definitely choose the regular first class car.

We were in the caboose and there is a little step-stool they put on the ground at the bottom step. I've had a knee replacement and it was a little difficult, but not that bad.
