The walk to the top was paved and not difficult except for being steep and at over 6000 feet I was breathing hard for the last 100 yards or so.

Driving on the Blue Ridge is slow, and there is a steep (but short) hike to the top, but the 360 view is fabulous on a clear day.

We stayed at a friends house in the mountains. I would say Asheville would be the closest place with good hotel selection.
