Of course we're here in December when a cold front has stopped right on top of the island. That just made us walk faster; good exercise. Would love to see the trail in warmer weather so we could see more wildlife.

Really easy and nice trail. Shaded so it's cooler than being in full sun. Nice interpretive postings along the trail. Great mix of wetlands and pine forest with a large diversity of plant life.

The Buxton Nature Trail near Cape Hatteras Light House is a short walk through woods ,treed and marshes. It is easy to navigate and nice. There are some Picnic Tables at the beginning of Trails if you need. A Good Place to relax

We enjoy this part of our vacation every year , it never gets old . Here are a few tips for visiting the woods keep windows rolled up (the mosquitoes are awful) , remove fishing rods from racks and any stuff you may have in roof rack . Enjoy the butterflies , ferns , creek and birds .

We only had a few minuets to travel on this trail in our jeep but looks like you could spend a lot more time

It was a short but fun walk through the woods and over marshes. It was beautiful at sunset. We found it by accident and it was a nice surprise

This trail might be a better option outside of summer. We saw more frogs and toads than I'd ever seen in a single area. We didn't really see any other wildlife. The mosquitoes were horrible - don't even think about going in without bug spray. We walked out with few bites, but were constantly being buzzed.

We walked the trail this morning and really enjoyed the 3/4 mile loop. The whole trail is fairly flat and easy to maneuver and took us about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace. YES, you need bug spray and a hat most definitely to keep the critters at bay, but would recommend to anyone wanting a walk in the maritime... More

Located near the Hatteras Lighthouse, we were prepared for mosquitos having applied Deet. We could only stay about seven minutes because we were constantly attacked by aggressive mosquitos, which made reading the plaques impossible. We had to give up and leave. Its recommended to spray your clothing as well. One mosquito attempted to bite me through my heavy sock. Would... More

I suppose for experienced hikers and woodsmen the Buxton Woods trail would be barely a snack. But I'm older and not much of a walker, and the short distance is perfect for me. I've hiked the trail nine times now, almost every time I've vactioned on Hatteras. The Buxton Woods are the only really forested spot on Hatteras Island--they lie... More
