As visitor centers go, this one is probably the best we have ever seen. The museum is excellent. The views are spectacular. The trail to the historic cabins is short, easy, and quite worthwhile. The park rangers are very helpful.

You have the Visitor Centers, and you have the Oconuluftee Visitor Center for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From the stream to the museum to the village to the elk to the mountains, it is a must stop to do.

The main reason to drive over here is for the beautiful views on the drive from the Sugarlands visitor center & to see the elk. We came at the same time last year as this year but did not see any elk this year so...More

Loved the presentation of a turn of the century mountain settlement. Elk have been introduced to local areas and were in view.

Drove from Gatlinburg hoping to see the elk, we live in Ohio and have never seen elk in the wild before. It was really amazing to see.

Elk watching at the visitor center is unforgettable! usually the elk come out late afternoon in the fall. This trip we also saw them early in the day. The rangers and volunteers make sure viewers remain safe as well as the elk.

In the morning or when is cloudy if you look in the open field you will see them. Once is hot they will hide in the brush area behind the big open field.

I would contact the visitor center at Sugarland...there is a short hike to a mall waterfall there. All of their visitor centers were so helpful. Unless you like long trails of slow cars stay away from Gatlinburg and... More
