A small parking lot is provided for users of the maritime forest hiking trail. The trailhead is located by the informational sign west of the parking lot. Please close the gate behind you. It is there to keep wild horses from entering into Corolla. There is a 1/3 mile accessible boardwalk as well as a 1.5 mile (roundtrip) primitive hiking trail. Horses and other wildlife can be observed while hiking the boardwalk and trail. There is a 2 hour time limit for the parking lot. Anyone wishing to leave a vehicle temporarily so they can tour the 4 wheel drive area or walk to the beach must use the county beach access parking lots less than 1 mile south on Highway 12. Free public parking is located at the Heritage Park area and County parking lot near the lighthouse.

Took a while to find this location in Trip Advisor - my title is the name of the location given at the Visitors Center in Corolla. This is a nice nature walk. The day my husband and I took the walk - both the boardwalk and the walking trail we did not get to see any wild horses or wildlife... More

It's 2 walks in one. A boardwalk winds 0.3 miles through the maritime woodland out to the sound. There is an extra walk on a well-marked path over the pine needles to get out to the estuary. We were disappointed not to see any horses (although others report that they have) but it was calm and peaceful and we did... More

This place is special! Parking is only for the estuary, but, often time spots are taken up by the beach goers. (Please park only where you are allowed - beach goers!) Once you are through the "secret" gateway to the amazing maritime forest area, your exploration begins. Take time to bird watch, WILD HORSES (yes, you will see the same... More

Pets are allowed. It's a wonderful short nature walk on a wooden boardwalk that's only .3 miles out and .3 miles back. Some great things to look at on the way out to the beautiful sound. There is also a pine needle covered trail out to the sound that is a bit longer.

Drove by this place tons of times, beautiful little trail that is a covered board walk, and a second trail that is pine needle. Easy walking, very flat. Magical trees. Very lovely

I went during Christmas so there was no people at all, although the weather was lovely for the time of the year. The place it's pretty good to walk and take some pictures. Unfortunately I haven't seen any wild horses or animals. I was impressed that there were not even birds on the trees.

The boardwalk is a nice easy stroll, a few informative readings along the way. Ends at the sound, seating along the way if needed. Also took the longer hike through the woods which is also a nice walk, but don't expect payoff at the end, the view there is the same or maybe even a bit more limited than the... More

We walked this trail in Mid -October after Matthew and were the only ones there! The walkway had already been cleared of fallen debris and the signs were very instructive and interesting. It worth the effort to drive there and take this tour.

We walked the boardwalk and it is a nice easy stroll and worth the time. We got off the boardwalk and did a longer hike which was quite buggy (to be expected) and ended up at the sound with pretty much the same view as the shorter walk on the boardwalk.
