History of the Albarmarle

A great place to learn about the pass of this area. Very informative. Does not take long to visit and view everything on your time.

We made the spur of the moment decision to explore Elizabeth City as a short day trip from Virginia Beach. Driving through the historic downtown on a Sunday morning was frankly depressing - dilapidated buildings, shuttered up businesses, virtually no pedestrian (well, where would you be going here?). Our 7 and 8 year old kids commented "And we drove an... More

Thank you for the feedback. Sorry we were not the destination for you. As a community, we are currently working on programs to revitalize and beautify the city. Your feedback is a reminder of how important these programs are. On Sunday, many of our businesses and tourism attractions (e.g., Museum of the Ablemarle, Arts of the Albemarle, and Port Discover)... We arrived looking for a new previously undiscovered location. As we normally do, we went to the Vistors Center (on a Saturday) only to find it closed

The visitor center was so helpful and wonderful Susan, Charlotte, everybody was great. Free use of a bicycle while I waited on a part for boat repair. Zero Night life but that's not what I was looking for. Too nice men at the dock, Ted and Gus always at the marina helping boats come in and tie up. Great small... More

We met them on trip to explore Wright brothers journeys. Great and hospitable people! Town is friendly if not remote geographically.

We were desperately looking for a county map. Once we found out that the Bureau was closed on the weekend, we continued to search gas stations, hotel lobbies and stores for a map (which we never did find after going to at least a dozen places to inquire)

Our county is in one of the poorest in NC. You can't compare us to your local metropolises. The downtown is TRYING to revitalize but like anything it takes time. What you miss if you are looking too fast are the people. There is a free book exchange on Main St. One woman just had it built it's lovely. There... More

Stay two nights at Elizabeth city as a close place when visiting the Outer Banks NC. We found the city lifeless, empty downtown and empty water front. No places open for coffe or snacks along Sunday, hardly found a dinner. The building were kept in a bad condition and the general atmosphere is of a place that it's time had... More

We were amazed at the number of homes for sale around the lake close to the old down town area,it would appear that effort is being made to get the historic downtown area happening again but the local residents may be voting with their feet and leaving ? No accommodation so drive out of town away from the water views... More
