A very unassuming and simplistic church with incredible frescoes by Ben Long. We visited this area 20+ years ago and had not heard of these "Churches of the Frescoes" so were pleased to find these hidden gems in small out of the way communities (St. Mary's in West Jefferson, NC and Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs). The Last Supper frescoe... More

Totally amazing! The fresco of the Last Supper is absolutely breathtaking!! It is a must see. You honestly feel like you are sitting there with them. And don't miss the paintings, entombments, carving, and mosaic downstairs. Honestly a must see and great for all ages.

We stopped in Glendale springs on our way to West Jefferson and the chruch is so peaceful and a wonderful place to worship. There are steps down to the lower level and rest rooms available. A must see and the cloth above the 12 deciples represents the mystry of when Jesus will return to Earth.

That artists will devote their time to portray elements of their faith is likely inspirational to the faithful. Anyone to whom the Lord's Supper is significant may appreciate stopping by this quaint little church to hear a short presentation while viewing the frescos and other church artifacts. The building is old and may present issues for visitors with respiratory ailments,... More

Historical place in the high country. Worth a visit if you love history, churches, etc; very close to the BRP.

My husband and I were models for Ben Long and his assistants when this fresco was being created. My husband is Matthew, the Apostle on the far left. It was quite an amazing summer being part of this experience. The final work is so beautiful, and the church itself is a place of great peace.

There are two churches with frescoes painted by Ben Long and his students several decades back — one is this one and the other is in nearby West Jefferson. There are frescoes of religious themes in two places in this church: down in the basement-columbarium and in the sanctuary. The church is open every day and there's a voice-over explaining... More

My mother took me here as a child in the early 80s. I wanted to share this with my children. The story alone is heart-warming and the narrator talks you through each character. The painting makes you feel like you are inside the last supper. I would guess and say the recording was close to 12-15 minutes. I am so... More
