Jackson Hole Gem Mine has been a family owned business since it was built in 1952. We are located exactly 9 miles from beautiful downtown Highlands, and 9 miles from downtown Franklin. We are 1/3 of a mile from the breathtaking Cullasaja Falls (means "sweetwater" in Cherokee). Also, 5 miles from Dry Falls (seen in The Last of the Mohicans). Our guests can browse our huge rock shop and gift store, or eat hot boiled peanuts on our front porch overlooking the beautiful Cullasaja River. Our gem mine is all weather fun for the whole family. Macon County is considered the "Gem Capital of the World" for a reason! Come and buy a bucket to sift! Small Buckets are $10 each, and one per person. Ultimate Buckets are $30 each or 2 for $50. These buckets are big and can be shared! We also have a $100 Bucket Club. This bucket is great for families. With this, you receive a $45 free cut of a gemstone that you find! Chuck is a master lapidary and we can help you choose what would be the best thing in your find to cut! We are handicapped accessible and very kid/pet friendly.

Lots of jewelry, precious stones, area souvenirs in the quaint little shop. Gem mining set-up to learn how to separate the dirt from precious stones. Interesting concept.

We were looking for activities to do as a family a with two young teens. We stopped in with very limited expectations and upon beginning our mining experience we were surprised at how easy and fun it was. We were there by ourselves which allowed the young man helping us to provide hands on support and he helped us identify... More

On a day of looking at waterfalls we came across this little stop that had gem picking in back but a nice selection of stones and jewelry in the shop. Picked up some nice things for grandkids and enjoyed looking around. Easy access off the winding road.

We made a 1 1/2 hour trip out to the Jackson Hole Gem Mine from Murphy N.C. and did not regret it. Our younger children panned for mines and got some great gems including some rough rubies and emeralds. The young man who helped us made our visit even more special by teaching us different facts about gems. Our children... More

We bought a large bucket of sand, stone & gems for $100. They gave us a $45 credit to cut & polish any gem- stone we wanted. The help was outstanding & we had a great time mining. It is a kid friendly place as well. Very enjoyable plus a wonderful shop to buy items of many minerals etc. We... More

The buckets are a little smaller and are definitely "enhanced" with gems and pretty sparkly things. Just enough to get you hooked on mining. The sandier soil makes it easy for anyone to "sluice" and the place is very clean (outhouse included). The cut gems in the store are a bit overpriced but the quality is good and they are... More

It was pretty much just an average store, selling gems and other souvenirs. We pulled off thinking we would do the whole mining experience, but it was just overpriced and lackluster.

My husband and I are 66 and 72 years respectively. We had never done anything like this B4, but had a terrific time mining for precious gems. This is good for every member of the family - from children through grandparents. A lot of fun, and educational. The staff teaches you about what you have found.

Jackson Hole had lots of charm and the people were friendly. I was a bit surprised at the prices. I've taken my children to a few of these gem stores but haven't seen the gift shop with prices so high. I usually like to buy little gems carved into animals as keepsakes for my boys. The prices were about triple... More
