Awesome views driving up the mountain. My little 4 cylinder Civic had no issues getting up the gravel and dirt roads. Once we fought the altitude and got to the top, the views were stunning.

The road to Max Patch is gravel and dirt, but the trees along the road were fabulous with fall color. The drive and the hike up to the view were well worth it.

My husband, my puppy dog, and myself took a hike to Max Patch. Although I wasn't wearing the right clothes or shoes (I had on leggings and Toms) the hike wasn't bad at all. Plus once you reach the top, it's totally worth the hike....More

Yes, the gravel road to this site is tedious but well worth the spectacular view at the top of the bald mountain. There are two paths to the top, one that curves around to the left from the parking area under trees, and the other...More

The view at the top is absolutely worth the LONG drive on the gravel road up the mountain. The road can get a little bumpy but not bad if you keep your speed low. You'll need a car wash afterwards, but again, worth it. For the...More

Max patch offers great 360 view of the mountains, we saw a black bear that was a treat to see. Make sure to go also to Max pond, peaceful pond in the woods. Can't wait to go again.

This is a "bald mountain" that was cleared for grazing in the 1800's. Once you find the place, which is fairly well marked, you can take a pretty easy 2-mile hike to the top. From there, you can see a very long way and multiple...More

Beautiful! Well worth the hike. I would advise everyone to take this trail. FYI, Trail is straight up and the air is a bit thin at the top.

As you have undoubtedly read, this hike to the top of Max Patch is well worth your time. The view is unequalled in Western NC. Here's my contribution. There are three trails to the top. The left most trail is long (over a mile) but...More

It would be about 7 miles away/around 20-30 min. at a campground store on Meadow Fork Rd. No facilities at all at Max Patch.

No cost. Max Patch itself is a bald. 360 degree view for miles once on top. You can hike either direction on the Appalachian trail and be in a forest within about 1/2 mile.
