What a hidden gem this is. When you visit the Wilmington area do not leave without a visit to Fort Fisher. It is just beautiful. Enjoy the sunset with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and The Cape Fear River on the other.

The beaches and surrounding wooded areas and parks are undeveloped and very natural. Beautiful place. We rented bicycles there and rode all over the place, so nice! It's right between the Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the NC Aquarium. Will definitely return here, and...More

We rented a 4x4 jeep for the day, which I would highly recommend, what fun! We took a drive out the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. We had the entire beach area to ourselves, the drive out was so fun!

We were very impressed with this recreation area. The facilities are top notch, great clean restrooms and showers. Great picnic areas with grills. The trails feature a WW II bunker, boardwalks, sand, and trees with a lookout into a reserve. This has something for everyone.

Fascinating telling of the history of the port of Wilmington, the last open port of the South which was the port of entry for all goods by the blockade runners bringing goods from Europe. Fort Fisher guarded the entrance of the Cape Fear river and...More

If you're staying in Kure Beach and like sun, sand and waves, the expansive beach at Fort Fisher is a better bet than the municipal beaches in town. There's a lot more room to spread out, and you even have space to fly a kite...More

The beach at Ft. Fisher was amazing. We rented chairs and umbrellas for the day. The grandkids used the surf board and boogie boards in the great waves. We were amazed by all the amenities. Next trip we bike the beach; it's that wide. Best...More

Lots of history here. Beautiful grounds. Can spend the day here walking and learning. They have a small gift shop too. Take a picnic and set under the beautiful trees by the water.

I have taken my 4×4 ford explorer wit h regular tires. I lowered the air pressure and I was fine. I would keep in my mind what sand can do to brakes and busted ball joints ect.
