A treasure in the Blueridge Mountains that showcases this Revolutionary war hero's home. The namesake of Lenoir, NC, this General fought in the battle of Kings Mountain, a turning point in favor of the colonies in the Revolutionary War.

I went here as a child in a big school group and loved it. I returned a few months ago as an adult. My hubby and I were the only ones there so it was just us and the tour guide. Very low key and comfortable. We got to explore at our own pace. Definitely recommended.

Fort Defiance is perhaps a misleading name. This site is the home and farm of General Wm. Lenoir. It is painstakingly cared and tended to. The living history days are really fantastic. My favorite time to go is at Christmas. There is an encampment set up and all of the guides are so knowledgeable. Check our the website for details... More

This site has always held a fascination for me. My first visit was before it became a historical site. It was still lived in by the Lenoir family and was run down, but the beauty of the building and location where not lost on a 12 year old who loved history. This is an important site for North Carolina but... More

Love the Home and Grounds! The Tour Guides were very knowledgeable and knew their history! We were also served Watermelon before the Tour and Ice Cream at the end of the Tour. Also there were some people dressed in the Era they were representing. Highly recommend !

I first visited the Fort about 25 years ago and still love to stop by from time to time. If you've never been, take a daytrip to Boone/Blowing Rock & stop on your way up. The history is very interesting and the place very quaint..you'll enjoy it!

Fort Defiance is the home of Gen William Lenoir, built roughly about 1790. The home is open to visit, and at Christmas a holiday meal served by waiters in period dress is offered in the home, as well as other holiday events. The Lenoir family was an important family in North Carolina history and in the Revolution. Happy Valley, where... More

Very good information about the area and people. Recommend this as a good idea for field trip ideas if not already done. History is not encouraged by many schools and is being lost. Tour guide was great with the history of house and architecture.

Thank You Wilda...... we do get around 1000 school kids a year for field trip programs. Especially during our Living History Days event during the anniversary of the Over Mountain Victory Trial days. More

I attended a recent Living History demonstration and workshop on 18th Century fabric dyes conducted by a reenactor and Ph.D. professor of Chemistry. She was very knowledgeable, engaging, and fun. This was a hands-on workshop and a wonderful introduction to life in America at the time of the revolution. The children who attended seemed to enjoy it as much as... More
