Nostalgia aside from the NC State Fairgrounds, Dorton doesn't serve much purpose beyond "specialty" scheduled acts for the State Fair and some odd shows for the weekends.

Showing a little age. Still a good place to visit during events at the Fairgrounds. Will visit again.

It's saddle shaped, silly!! Innovative design for it's time. Sadly the original architect died in a plane crash prior to it's completion. Really cool small venue.... mostly NC State Fair concerts, but check the website for other things. Hope you make it soon!!

This is a landmark building so architecture buffs will enjoy seeing the structure's unique exterior design at the N.C. Fairgrounds. The interior has held sporting events, including hockey, celebrity engagements, etc.

Serving many different purposes, this mid-century modernist building is one of the greatest architectural landmarks in North Carolina, with its striking exterior form and wonderfully open interior. It was internationally famous when built and still is.

For a building approaching its 70th birthday, Dorton Arena holds up pretty well. It is not a large venue and it is built in the middle of the State Fairgrounds, so that should give you an idea of its intent. Great for livestock shows, trade events and such. I have attended such events, as well as cheerleading competitions and professional... More

Yes Dorton Arena is starting to show its age but that doesn't changes the fact it is a piece of Raleigh history. All kinds of athletic events have been and still are being held here. It is the place to go for a concert - no. But it wasn't intended for that. It was built for the NC State Fair... More

This is the graduation venue for a local college. The arena has great sight lines. The acoustics are good. The down side is that it is hot. It is not air conditioned. The parking is a little confusing but available. Bathrooms are a little inconvenient.

We watched some cloggers on stage here clogging to live music. The acoustics in here are terrible. Sound reverberates everywhere. This is probably Raleigh's worst arena but it's still used and is still functional. It has outlived it's useful life and somehow the state keeps it on life support.
