It's recommended to visit the Ningxia museum before visiting helanshan rock paintings. You will be awed by having to see the painting right in your eyes (though some are faded and hardly seen). The mountain surrounding it is awesome and give you the surreal feel....More

The mountains and surroundings of this area are stunning and perfect for an outside adventure (but if that's what you want you're better off going to the National Park). The museum is very well designed, arranged and maintained; an interesting visit. The rock carvings themselves...More

The ancient rock paintings are pretty hard to see in the wild - considering they've been exposed to the elements for thousands of years it's not surprising - and only the ones in the museum are really clear. The area itself is quite scenic, and...More

Make sure to go further into the canyon as most of the tourist groups do. The place is crowed and touristy at the beginning, but is getting really nice. There are some options to hike up the mountains and look down the canyon.

I read the writing about this place for long time. And proud to admit, when my friends know that I had been there via my facebook album, they are all delighted.

Visited in 2009 and found it interesting but you have to close your eyes to the usual China tourism squalor (gift shops, concrete paths, etc.). In 2009 we could climb the hills and stray off the sidewalks where we found additional carvings un-enhanced that were...More

I enjoyed this place but think for non-artists it might be too far for too little. Its highly commercialised "exit through the gift shop" and very much on the tour bus circuit. That said the rock carvings are interesting - if heavily "enhanced" to improve...More
