This experience of that type mountain and nature setting was definitely unique in all my extensive world travels, where a river meets a low mountainous range with beautiful features of prehistoric carvings made by nature, the weather and the Elbe river. German minds and man...More

We spent a week in Bad Schandau surrounded by these mountains. The mountains are amazing to look at, lovely for moderate walkers and apparently have no shortage of challenging hikes and rock and ice climbing. Well worth visiting.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are stunning. Love the Elbe river flowing, lush green meadows, tall mountains and blue skies. On a gorgeous Sunny Day, this place really looks amazing. The mountains are somewhat similar to the ones you will see in Zhangjiajie, China.. if you...More

Sandstone meets granite in an area where the European ice-sheet melted to cause erosive features of magnificence and grandeur. Much of the walking, which is clearly way-marked, is on forested paths which are well-maintained. Climbs to the high points (steins) are never more than 800...More

A great place to hike and view some awesome rock formations. There are plenty of opportunities for photography. At the peak, there's a restaurant set into the formation. You can hike at your own pace and the peak has many formations to appreciate.

Take a few days exploring this area. The Bastei Bridge gets the crowds( Deservedly) but there is a wide other surrounding countryside there for the picking.

The small Elbe River-side village of Rathen formed our base for a three-hour 200 metre plus ascent of the basalt hills to view the Elbe Valley and the spectacular mountain formations. There are many great views and it's a photgrapher's paradise..

Not as spectacular as the formations that can be admired in many area of the States, but still quite intresting and often surrounded by green. The best formations and the most intresting and fun hike for us was Schrammsteintor. Going up and down tall set...More
