A wonderful wedding comprises so many elements. As the arranger, you can only control the selection of the venue but from that virtually all flows. Our daughter chose Montsalvat after much comparing and it was an inspired choice. Yes, it looks a little "worn" but I urge the observer to look through this. As a re-creation of a baronial hall... We had our family and friends outing to celebrate passed loved ones booked well in advance for lunch at Montsalvat. On confirming the day before we were told that there was no booking for us and that we could only do breakfast. Disappointed!! Food was lovely, food and drinks orders were taken with almost military precision but the friendliness was... More

Several old and interesting buildings where artists used to live. I was told that there are still a couple of artists working on the premises. Big open spaces and lovely open fires in some of the buildings. I will visit again another time. It's worth to see if you like history.

We had not been to Montsalvat for decades I guess, but seeing as we were already in Eltham for lunch we decided to drop in to Montsalvat. It was a rather steamy stormy autumd Tuesday in Melbourne so there were very few people actually present at Montsalvat. The property is what remains of a vision in the 1930's Victoria when... More

Hadn't been for years and wanted to rekindle my interest - it's a wonderful old building and grounds but had breakfast first and I lost any "appetite" for staying - like the past reviewers, think there should be some concession for diners

Just wanted a quick stroll after eating breakfast at the cafe. Turns out they want $14 per person. I get that money is required for up keep, a small donation would be reasonable if you weren't dining on the grounds already, I've been previously and it's beautiful! I just think it's a bit cheeky to ask $14 and to ask... More

Beautiful old buildings and grounds. Was a little disappointed that we couldn't get into the great hall as there was a wedding on so I'd suggest ringing before hand to check availability. Little old chapel was delightful. Grounds have some peacocks roaming around. Thought the cafe was a little overpriced.

Not far from Melbourne is a unique old estate that dates back to the 1930's - set up as an artists colony but built as a replica of some strange 19th century dream, it is very impressive in a solid Victorian sort of way. The great hall is lovely and the chapel is the perfect place for a funeral -... More

An interesting artists colony with many workshops and artifacts to look at. Montsalvat includes a good restaurant that is open most of the day. Some of the guests may be snooty as I was given a few looks of disdain by snobby arty types. Worth a visit to this historically famous artist colony.
