The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

Enjoy going with or without kids, it just so nice to lose yourself and enjoy the animals. It is great exercise to stroll or faster yet if there is anone needing to use a wheelchair they can enjoy the trip as well. Grab some food and plan a picnic while you are at It!

We had a great day walking through the zoo and seeing the animals. The zoo is small enough to see it all within a couple hours. The train ride is a great way to see everything. The wasps were pretty bad while we were there.

This is such a cute zoo. We took the train ride and also walked around with family. The bears were entertaining and the goats wanted lots of attention.

The Dakota Zoo makes for a great family visit. Just inside the entrance is a playground (for running off energy) and furry animals perfect for petting (bring some quarters for hand-feeding the goats). If you don't want to walk the paths, there's a train tour.

We had a good time and enjoyed our day. Most of the animals were out and active. Lots of chipmunks running around which thrilled my son. The zoo was clean and friendly staff. The train ride enables you to see all the animals. Take the Time and go, you will be glad you did.

The Dakota Zoo offers a lot for everyone. The train tour is sure to be a hit for children and adults. Set aside some time and take it all it. It's well worth the visit.

Enjoyed riding the train through the zoo and afterwards walking around the many paths to see the animals. Many were difficult to see because of so much dense wiring. Picture taking was sometimes difficult as well. Still quite a memorable visit and not overly priced.

Great just for an hour or two outing. We took my sister and nieces from out of town that don't have a zoo where they live. We've been too many zoos that are quite large and our favorite is always the African safari and this doesn't have that. So this zoo has a lot of farm animals but does have... More

For a private (non-government) zoo, this one has done a great job bringing in unique animals that are fun to see. The grizzly bears are always the highlight for my sons. I love that after all these years you can still feed the farm animals and the prairie dogs. We'll never stop coming here!

Took my 2 small children here, 1&3, they liked it. The playground inside the zoo is great and there are more playgrounds very close to the zoo entrance. The animals were sad, but thats zoos. They enjoyed feeding the goats. Tigers were the best and seemed healthy. Many of the displays were closed or down for various reasons; no butterflies... More
