About
As a hub for tourism, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is home to the visitor information centre, Gift Shop, and a Western Canadian frontier village with 24 heritage cabins and two museum buildings filled with intriguing artifacts. The Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village was established in 1966, and was intended to preserve the area's vibrant pioneer heritage. Over the years, the efforts of countless volunteers and employees has seen the museum grow to include 26 buildings and 24,000+ artifacts. Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is an outdoor heritage facility. Visitors are able to walk directly into any of the historic buildings, and view the artifacts, which are displayed openly. The open concept and self guided museum means you also free to wander through six acres of beautiful gardens, including a pond and waterfall (summer) and large community garden area. Each of the buildings in the Village is authentic, restored, and furnished with period furniture. Artifacts and everyday tools used by the owners and inhabitants of that time, are displayed in each building. The history is not roped off or preserved behind glass.

Why have I never heard of this place!
Sep. 2020
I came upon this Pioneer Village while searching on Trip Advisor for things to do in southern Alberta. Wow! Best historical village I’ve ever been to. From the street it doesn’t look like much but once you pass through the entrance and gift shop you’ve stepped back in time. It’s a self guided circular loop and it doesn’t matter which way you go. There is an audioguide app but we just wandered. There is plenty of info in each building.

Every other historical site has roped off rooms, so you can only peek in. Not here. You can get a close up look at all the artifacts on display. What’s even better is that whereas other places show an old home as it was, these houses have themes. One has old washing machines, mangles and irons. Another is full of old kitchen wood stoves and oil burners. The old bank building has a room dedicated to all things photography. I learned about the Doukhobors and stepped inside one of Kootenai Brown’s original cabins.

Once you purchase your entrance, $12 in the off season, you can leave the park and return up until closing time. You can even bring a picnic lunch. Just over a 2 hour drive from Calgary, this is a wonderful way to spend the day.

Nostalgia at its finest

This is one of the best “hands on” museums I have ever toured. Reasonable price with hours of enjoyment. I suggest bug spray as the grounds have lots of bushes and I found them to be abundant in some spots. This activity is for kids of all ages. Some uneven ground so if older best to watch your step (mostly at the beginning). Bring a camera and some extra money as they have a wonderful little store to browse to take something fun home. Staff was extremely friendly which is always nice.

Lovely to wander through the Village. it is well set out with historic buildings and gardens with places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. All the heritage buildings contained original artefacts of the period. Staff very informative and helpful. Not very well signposted

Hidden Gem

I have lived in Pincher Creek for 42 years and it wasn't until this August that my Grandson and I took the time to visit each and every display. It was so worth every minute of the 3 hours that we spent there. The Museum Staff and Volunteers have done a wonderful job depicting the history of our area and town. So interesting and fun. Highly recommend to all visitors and towns people.

My wife, daughter and I really enjoyed going through the village. Lots of interesting history, artifacts and buildings. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area but give yourself 2-3 hours to really do the place justice.

Having not visited for over 10 years, was very pleasantly surprised by how this place has been developed. Still retains the ols pioneer spirit ans artifacts and now has many additions from the locality with excellent descriptions of Pincher Creek through its history and archtecture. Nice cafe and museum shop well woth a visit.

I was surprised how much the museum has grown in the last 40 years. This is an amazing journey through the past. The variety of buildings filled with period furniture and artifacts really transports you to another time and place.
