About
Since 1986 we have been operating tours in the pristine waterways of Queen Charlotte Strait, Johnstone Strait (Robson Bight), and Blackfish Sound. This area is considered the best place to find Northern resident orca. Large numbers of humpback whales also congregate here during the summer months. Other marine mammals such as Biggs (transient) orca, minke whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dalls porpoises, sea otters, Northern sea lions, and harbour seals are regularly sighted on tours. We take 11 people maximum and pride ourselves in offering a more personalized approach to whale watching. The small group sizes offer more intimacy with the wildlife and an opportunity to interact with the skipper. The boat has a marine toilet onboard and provides enough space that when stationary, guests are welcome to move about the boat to take photographs and enjoy the dynamic scenery and wildlife. It is a perfect whale watching platform. We offer ethical, educational, and meaningful experiences.

We booked a morning and an afternoon tour with Seasmoke. It was incredible! In the morning, we saw sea otters, humpbacks, including a mom and a calf, stellar sea lions, and dall's porpoises. In the afternoon we saw killer whales, bald eagles, and more humpbacks. The boat is small, creating a more personal experience, while still being very comfortable. The guides were fantastic, and I appreciate that they respected the wildlife and kept to ethical standards of viewing.

We had a great day on the water today with Sea Smoke Whale Watching Tours! Nate is an informative and enjoyable guide. The boat only takes 11 visitors so a very personalized experience. The boat has comfortable seating with a canopy to protect you from the sun. Everyone on the boat gets a great view! We saw rafts of sea otters, some eating urchins. Many humpback whales, including two mothers and their calves. Inquisitive Dall porpoises came over to the boat and swam all around, racing us as we went. Spectacular! Don't hesitate to book with Sea Smoke, you will thoroughly enjoy it!

A boat that can hold up to 12 people, so no mass tourism.
At the start you get a special suit, for the warmth and that you stay afloat. Not an unprecedented luxury for us, was pretty chilly on the water in September.
The skipper Nate and his assistant are very passionate and tell a lot about the wildlife. He doesn’t look at the time either, were back half an hour later because we were still spotting killer whales.
On our tour many whales, orcas, sea lions and various according seen.
Definitely recommended

I had such a fabulous time whale watching with Seasmoke with a friend in June that I booked another trip for September for me and my husband. Each trip was different, and both were absolutely amazing! Nate has a huge regard for the safety and enjoyment of his clients, and massive respect and understanding of marine ecosystems. His knowledge and passion for the animals and their environment is hugely evident and we were privileged to learn from him while he showed us humpbacks, orcas, porpoises and a variety of seabirds. I came away with new and different information on each trip, and would go back again in a heartbeat! As well, we appreciated being able to be picked up/dropped off at the dock at Alder Bay where we were staying rather than having to drive somewhere to join the tour.

Fantastic trip out with skipper Nate.
A small boat means you are guaranteed great views and we had a truly amazing afternoon! Orcas, humpbacks, doll porpoises and a mama deer with 2 babies.
Dream come true. Highly recommended.
Nate was extremely ethical and abided by all the rules which matted a great deal to us.

Our whale watching experience was truly unforgettable. We were picked up directly from the Alder Bay campsite in a small boat, which provided a very personal touch. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and his enthusiasm was contagious. We saw otters, sea lions, and several whales, including a playful calf. I would love to go again!

We just made the whale watching tour. It was so exciting watching 3 humpbacks, doll porpoises, sea otters, sea lion and seals on our tour. Janine was very knowledgeable and experienced, telling interesting facts about the wildlife. The tour is definetly a highlight on our trip.

We had a great time, we saw plenty of wildlife and at some points there were 5 humpback whales at a time. The crew added an extra half an hour because of the abundance of wildlife that showed up. As well , the crew is terrific, the suits we were given to put on isolated the cold completely. They even handed out binoculars:)

I just got back from my vacation at north Vancouver Island and wanted to share what an amazing time I had at Alert Bay. My trip goal was to see whales and have a relaxing time. Alert Bay is a perfect place to do whale watching tours. I went out with Seasmoke Whale Watching twice and had a great time. We saw Orcas, Humpbacks, dolphins, sea lions, otters and eagles. What an amazing vacation!!! I would definitely recommend Seasmoke Whale watching. 🐋🩷

We had a fabulous time with Seasmoke! Captain & crew were friendly and informative. They were flexible and took us where the animals were. We saw orcas, humpback whales, stellar sea lions and porpoises.
We loved the open boat. They provide really warm flotation suits, so we weren't cold. I would recommend a warm hat (instead of the hood) and gloves.
Definitely recommend!!!
