It seems strange to reivew a First Nations burial spot, but the burial grounds are listed in Alert Bay tourist brochures, so it's okay to visit. There are actually two locations; this one is on the main street in Alert Bay. Visitors are asked to view from the street. Some families maintain their ancestors totem poles; others let them naturally decay. There is a small sign beside the grounds, and the local tourist office offers a brochure that gives a more complete history of some of the totem poles. The carvings are amazing and definitely worth seeing. Another burial ground is away from downtown and appears to still be in use. The graveside totems there also are special to view. For those arriving by ferry, the burial grounds are to your right on the main street. You will pass the well-stocked tourist office, so pick up the brochure on your way.

Wonderful to see the burial grounds with so many totem poles. The information board is helpful and provides better understanding & insight. I have never had the chance to see a burial ground elsewhere so would recommend it to anyone who is lucky enough to spend time in Alert Bay.

We walked past on our travels through town. Very cool to see, but you can only see the most prominent as you must stay on the sidewalk.

Just a short stroll down the road from the ferry dock sits the this fascinating burial grounds. While you cant walk around the totem poles they are easily viewed from the bordering road.

Stop by the Alert Bay Visitor's Centre and pick up their guide to the totem poles of Alert Bay. Then head to the original burial grounds and use the guide to learn about the poles. It's very interesting to learn about the poles.

First stop by the Alert Bay Visitors Centre less than 5 minutes from these burial grounds to get the "Totem Poles of Alert Bay" brochure. Then walk to the site and view the poles from the road as no one is allowed to walk through the grounds. You will see the memorial pole for Mungo Martin, a Haida Mortuary panel and many more by master carvers.

I wish I had the opportunity to come back and do some more photography under different light conditions. Note that one is not allowed to walk around the grounds, but only look and photograph from the street.

great examples of totems - more than you usually see in an area. Good for photos but limited because you are not allowed to approach but from one/two roads. Literally took 15 minutes to see (and that was long because i took a bunch of photos)

Honoured to have had the chance to view this area and respectfully observe. Each marker is impressive including those returning to the earth.

An unusual yet interesting historical site. A must see when visiting in Alert Bay. Its an easy walk along the boardwalk from the ferry terminal. Please respect the signs and remain across the street as you take your photographs.
