The Jack-o’-lantern Lights the Way!
Aug. 2020
The Decker Lake Trading Post is an establishment rife with history. Prior to 1990 it existed as a Second Hand store; however, all of that changed when Lawrence Hallgren bought the establishment, expanded it and added a gas station. With him at the helm, the offerings at the “Trading Post” grew to include practically everything and anything under the sun, be they antiques, quirky trinkets, practical sundries or fine China. In short, the Trading Post became a “spot with character,” to quote an earlier reviewer. It’s a hodgepodge of stuff, to be sure, but there is an order to the madness and it’s a beautiful thing.

I admit to always being intrigued by the Trading Post. I can recall passing through Burns Lake with the folks in early to late 1990s and spying the inflatable jack-o’-lantern from our car window. “What’s in there?,” I thought, “and why is there a jack-o’-lantern up? It’s summertime!” The eclectic nature of the shop’s exterior had my young mind running wild with possibilities! Little did I know that nearly 20 years would pass before I’d finally get the chance to patronize this establishment.

Fast-forward to the current day. My partner and I were in the midst of our Mid-Summer adventure, cruising along Highway 16 en route to Prince George. As we approached the Burns Lake area, we spied the unmistakable Jack-o’-lantern of the Trading Post and decided to stop by because . . . why not? The moment we entered the premises, we were greeted by Janet, daughter of the original owner. She invited us to explore – and we did for a good 25 or so minutes. I think it would be pointless to try and describe what you’ll find here because, well, this place has a bit of everything. Want a 1950s-era antique? A colourful decoration for your home? Something strange and unique? A soda pop? All that and more is here. Indeed, we were able to find a few unique gifts over the course of our scouring.

The Decker Lake Trading Post has been acknowledged as “a fixture in the community” by My Bulkley Lakes Now news outlet and, after visiting this shop, it’s easy to see why. It’s full of character; it’s unique; and it’s of and for the community. Do yourself a favour and check it out if you’re in the area!

Always fun to browse around the Trading Post!
Jan. 2017 • Solo
The Decker Lake Trading Post is an awesome place to go and browse around. You might not even know you need something until you happen across it at the Trading Post and wonder how you lived without it! There is sooo much to look at here, be sure to give yourself a good hour or 2 to look around. They sell used goods and new goods too! They have a surprising cache of beautiful furniture. Quality "old school" furniture built using actual wood unlike the furniture of modern days made of sawdust and glue posing as wood. Janet runs the show and she is a total hoot! The coffee is always on and she is bound to have a funny joke to tell. She is a friendly shop keeper and gives great customer service ( she even came to the shop to meet me outside of regular business hours so I could pick up a dining set that I had purchased from her!)
So be sure to stop in at the Trading Post if you are travelling through Burns Lake and have a browse through the huge amount of curios, decor items, furnishings and pretty much anything else you could ever think of!

Great Eclectic Store

Great little store to find off the wall items. We were looking for a donut cutter and we found it here. We also picked up some small cast iron skillets that we hadn't seen anywhere else. Of course you can get pop and snacks and gas if you need it. We spent over an hour looking around and the store is pretty small.

Unique
Jun. 2016 • Family
Always something unique. When I am looking for something unusual, one of a kind, or just something I think is cool for decor for my home or business for displays, Decker Lake is where I look first. My grandson loves to go to the "Treasure Store" to dig around to find his treasures and trinkets. The trading post is one of our places to go for our time together to find something cool for his fort or his outdoor adventures.

Charming, great character (and ice cream) Wonderful shop keeper
Jun. 2016 • Solo
I love shopping here. The atmosphere is inviting, friendly, and someone is always available for a chat and a coffee, pop, ice cream. There are great items for every day, and my favourites are the antiques! Great variety, prices, and really something for almost everyone.
The shop keeper and owner are kind, attentive, patient and helpful.
I love every item I have purchased, and will return again and again. Great for campers, andvacationers too, with gold panning items, and tools of all sorts.
