Marble Canyon is a beautiful place to visit in Kootenay. I stopped here on September 24, 2020.
There was a 1.5 km looped trail leading alongside the canyon and over a series of foot bridges with some inclines on the way up but still an easy trail. There were incredible views of the deep and narrow canyon, powerful glacier river rushing through, and a waterfall at the end. The trail looped along one side of the canyon and continued along the other. There are gates along the edge for safety, so don’t climb over them for photos (people have died doing this). It was absolutely gorgeous here and the colour of the water was an amazing shade of turquoise. Lots of great photo opportunities!
The trail was not busy when I visited around 11 am. There is a small parking area right off the highway. There were quite a few puddles over the trail that would be difficult to navigate if you don’t have waterproof boots or shoes. It took me around an hour to explore the trail and area.

We had planned to hike Johnston Canyon but park wardens were not allowing people to drive to the parking lot there because of Covid-19. We have hiked it before in the winter and the paths there are pretty narrow in some places making it hard to physical distance. They suggested we go to Marble Canyon instead. The hike is shorter than Johnston Canyon but also has some very beautiful waterfalls.

We visited on Canada Day. When we reached around 8:30 am, the parking lot had just a couple of vehicles parked. Flush toilets are available. Before you get to the first bridge, you find an option to go down a few steps and access the river. A little ahead there is the first bridge followed by a long flight of steep stairs. There are great views along the canyon and a waterfall at the end. Loved to see some beautiful wildrose flowers along the way.
There are several footbridges along the way with incredible views of the canyon, river and the waterfalls. Some good opportunity to get great pictures. As you get closer to the waterfall, lots of puddles so better to wear waterproof shoes. Does not hurt to put some bug spray too. When we were done around 9:30 am, the parking lot was more than half full. Hope to get back here for the incredible winter views of the canyon.

The Marble Canyon walk was great, and there are many other scenic walks and hikes in the area. As far as Marble Canyon campground goes though, we were not impressed. After being forced to pay for a fire permit for each night of our stay, we arrived to find the huge concrete bin completely empty of firewood. There were some dead trees cut down around the campsites, but unless you travel with a chainsaw you are out of luck. We will choose another campgound next time we visit the area.

Notable Features:
Smaller than Banff and Lake Louise National Park campgrounds and more tree cover/privacy in some of the sites. Google maps street view provides an idea of what you are booking.
No train sounds. Highway and river sounds present depending on the site you choose.
Small loops. No large trailers. Most people had tents. We had 18 foot trailer and it fit well.
Surrounded by mountains in all directions. Almost every site has a mountain view of some sort.
Flush toilets operational.
Food storage questionable. Sani dump questionable. Did not investigate.
Bear scat on road.
A marmot lived under the garbage bin of G loop.
Access to world class hiking options within a short drive.
One of our top rated reservable spots in the Canadian Rockies. We like mountains, privacy, trees, and hiking. Don’t need luxuries or conveniences-It’s not an updated site, but we loved it.

Nice little walk right along the highway. The trail is well marked and the views are amazing. The parking lot fills up but the path is very generous so you wonder where all the people are.
Make this a stop on your way to Radium, BC. It is a short walk. Do not plan this to be a full day adventure. It is just a stop along the way.

We’d never heard of Marble Canyon before & pulled over by chance & we are so glad we did. It’s an easy 30 min round trip that most people would do easily. There’s several bridges crossing over to give you numerous looks at the canyon & the water far below. At the top there’s some lovely waterfalls too & there’s good flow at present.

Just a short distance from the crowded and overrated Johnston Canyon is this far superior canyon walk. Marble Canyon is less effort, less crowded, and so much more beautiful. This is a narrow and deep canyon cut by a waterfall that has drifted back over the years. Bridges zigzag over top of the rushing waters below, offering visitors a chance to see many angles of this natural wonder. The bridges often indicate where the waterfall at the end of the hike was thousands of years ago. Do yourself a favor and make this your priority canyon visit in this area. Do both if you want, but definitely do this one. You will not regret it.

Awesome 30 mins out and back... Shorter time if you don't stop to take pictures, but hard not to! Be careful on the steps - they were VERY icey & slippery the day we went there... Otherwise a ver worthwhile stop!

Wonderful short walk, it's so beautiful here. We went here after reading reviews for Johnstone canyon being super crowded. Easy parking and fairly quiet. No queuing for pictures. It's only 0.7k to the waterfall and there is a little beach you can dip your toes in.

hello- how much time (duration) is the path to the marble canyon ?
thx
Written February 22, 2018
The path is only about 3-5 km. The path is there and back style, so YOU choose how far you want to go. How long you take depends on your hiking style. I'd do it in less than an hour, but you might want to linger. The canyons are spectacular, as are the falls at the far end.

Are there picnic facilities at Marble Canyon?
Written January 29, 2018
There are washrooms at the parking lot, and benches along the trail. I don't think they are actual picnic tables anywhere. There are lovely big flat rocks that will do just fine. FYI - in the Canadian Rockies, we like to keep things are natural as possible. Not a lot of 'infrastructure' once you're on the trail.

Although the woman I spoke to on the phone was polite and nice, she would not provide room details. I wanted to know if the room would be on the first or second floor, with or without a lake view, and she said she could not know until the day before our arrival. This concerns me for the price, I would think it would be reasonable to ask for disclosure on important details like those. I requested the second floor to avoid people walking heavy or kids above us from a 1st floor room, if possible, and she said she could not guarantee that accommodation be made) My confirmation number is 201843. If you can provide some more information I would really appreciate it, thanks!

This is NOT the Marble Canyon you are thinking of. There are NO hotels inside the Kootenay National Park as it is an animal and nature reserve.
