We live in a busy city, and for this vacation, I really wanted my kids (ages 9 and 13) to have an immersive experience in nature. When I came across Kingfisher's Family Kayaking trip, the description of rustic beauty and fun sounded too good to be true. But now that we are back, I can attest that Kingfisher did an excellent job giving an accurate picture of this four day experience. Their basecamp kayaking trip was exactly what we were looking for -- a small, thoughtfully designed trip with outstanding guides in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Going into the trip, I knew that we weren't visiting at the optimal time of year for orcas because we could only visit in early July. I appreciated that Kingfisher's website transparently shares that later in July, August, or September are better times for orca viewing. However, we were still delighted by the wildlife encounters we experienced both on water and from the basecamp. We saw at least a dozen bald eagles, Dall’s porpoises, seals, sea lions, jumping baby salmon, humpbacks, Christmas anemones, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and more.
We appreciated the basecamp not only because of the comfort but because there were plentiful tidepools right at the camp and opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking vistas and watch for wildlife right from our perch on the rocks. Our kids had hours of fun skipping and collecting rocks, playing hide and seek in the woods, and exploring the intertidal zones.
Our lead guide, Wendy, was seriously amazing. She hit all the right notes in terms of balancing safety and adventure, and she brought a sense of wonder and joy to the experience, for kids and adults alike. Our kids had hours of fun from her teaching them about wishing stones and about feeding mussels to the sculpin. I will always remember the Narnia she showed us on our hike to the ancient red cedar surrounded by dazzling spongy moss. When we visited Alert Bay later in the trip and learned to do some weaving with red cedar bark at the U'mista Culture Center, we remembered what Wendy had taught us about the Culturally Modified Trees and appreciated the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw artistry even more.
As my kids and I are all beginner kayakers, I appreciated that Wendy had high standards for safety, having all of us practice the removal of the spray skirt, making us redo the entry if someone stood up in the kayak, etc. I was consistently impressed with the way she factored in all of the elements—wind, tide, currents—to figure out the optimal route and timing for our days. I also appreciated how she led the team, teaching us to work together to move the boats safely. Her kayaking tips made us better, more efficient kayakers, allowing us to enjoy our time on the water even more. She was a consummate pro and just a delightful, kind human. I feel really lucky that we got to have Wendy as our guide.
Because we were a family of three, our 9-year-old ended up in a double with one of the assistant guides, George or Mackenzie. Both were exceedingly gracious with our super chatty kid who took a lot of paddling breaks. George also did a great job engaging the kids in refining their rock skipping skills and checking out the intertidal life.
A word about the food: our guides did an incredible job feeding us with delicious meals, snacks, and desserts throughout this trip. We were nourished with great food, great company, and incredible nature on Hanson Island. This area of the world is pristine and stunning, and we very much hope to return one day.
Enormous thanks to Kingfisher for helping us create memories as a family that we will treasure for a lifetime!

This was my second trip with Kingfisher and it was just as amazing as the first trip. Kingfisher provides all equipment and food. The equipment is first rate and the guides are super knowledgeable. This time we also had a bonus gourmet local food dinner on our return to Sandspit. An overall amazing experience!

It was fantastic! We highly recommend the kayak and grizzly tour. We started our vacation with Kingfisher in late August and this tour set the benchmark very high for the rest of our trip through Canada.
Camping on an island close to nature and wildlife was an exceptional experience. The guides made it even better by taking care of us on land and on water, sharing their knowledge with us. Not only did we watch whales, but we also saw other marine and wild life and learned about currents and flora. Many thanks to Audrey, Jess and Kayleigh.
Environmentally friendly, with high respect for wildlife, far from mass tourism. Kayaking for beginners and advanced. Nice mix of people and good group size.
The grizzly tour with Sea Wolf Adventures on the last day was a great way to end the tour. Sherry and Brandon shared their indigenous knowledge of the wildlife and islands with us. We watched orcas on the way to see the grizzly bears. Visiting the cultural center in Alert Bay and hearing personal stories was also a highlight! Thank you so much.

Excellent experience on the 4 day kayak with whales trip! The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and the basecamp was so serene. Food was tasty and plentiful. Only tip I would offer is to consider bringing your own pillow. Looking forward to booking another Kingfisher adventure in the future!

This was a fabulous kayak trip! We loved hearing first (because of the fog) and then seeing so many humpback whales. Also saw black bears (not too close) and eagles! The meals were fabulous, the guide informative, helpful and great fun. The quality of the gear they provided was top of the line. What more could one ask for!

We had the most amazing time. I cannot recommend Kingfisher Wilderness Adventures enough. Professional, knowledgeable and good fun.
The equipment and camp was fantastic and food amazing (you will not be hungry throughout!!)
The guides were also great. Lana was an exceptional Camp chef and made sure we were well fed with good home cooked food, Alissa was great fun and Wendy so knowledgable and great company, they even organised a little honeymoon treat for us!!
Thank you so much. A Once in a life time experience and we cannot fault anything.
We saw Orca, Humpbacks, Sealions, Seals, Deer and Eagles, and could hear blows from the Humpback all throughout the night, stunning to wake up to.
You won’t be disappointed.

I have returned home from my long anticipated paddle trip to Haida Gwaii with Kingfisher Wilderness Adventures.. A 1600 mile drive, a 150 mile ferry journey across the North Pacific, another brief ferry ride across Alford Bay, a 1 hour cross country van ride and a 45 mile "rippin"Zodiac ride to our launch point, all well worth it!
We paddled 8 days, covering 50+ nautical miles of the Southern Gwaii Hanas Provincial Park. The conditions dictated the route, distance and stopping points. Big tidal shifts, strong currents and weather(wind&rain which we got both) really impact this region, as does the shallow sea shelves that create waves, chop and sketchy open water crossings.
We carried all our own camping gear as well as all the food for the group of 10 in our kayaks, We paddled Seaward Tyee sea kayaks, good solid touring boats that handled the loads and conditions well.
Wildlife, a brief list: humpback whales, so close you could feel the spray from them, killer whales at a distance, thankfully, dolphins, sea lions, bears fishing for early salmon run and Eagles everywhere, Puffins, deer, etc, etc. An environment that is so isolated and protected, shows what conservation can achieve with wildlife.
Haida native culture, which our guides shared with us and included in books brought along the trip, is astounding considering where they lived, abundance allowed for developing their culture, art and buildings. Their mythology is animal based with the most extraordinary tales of how the world was formed and created, Eagles and Ravens are the predominate factors in clan identity. The Haida people control access to the islands many places of historic importance and many sites in the park are off limits.
Great people to paddle with, the guides Carter and Jen were excellent, hard working both on the water and in camp. The other guests, all Canadians, were wonderful and not a whiner among them. The Kingfisher guides were very competent and saw to all the details of the trip to make it safe, fun and exciting, I wouldn't go there without them. Excellent copious amounts of delicious food, French press coffee to start each day, comfortable camps, all out of a kayak, added to the experience.
The paddling, the sometimes challenging conditions, beautiful remote campsites all in an extraordinary environment made for the ultimate kayak expedition of my lifetime!

Interesting to read the other recent reviews of Kingfisher. My husband and I were not aware of Kingfisher Expeditions, but were lucky enough to be invited on a 6-day kayak trip north of the God's Pocket area this July 2022 with friends, when a couple had to drop out of the trip. We have only done a handful of guided kayak trips over the years, so did not know what to expect. But Kingfisher was pretty amazing, I have to say! But let me qualify that.....if you actually want to be paddling for a good portion of the day, like the wilderness camping experience and want a true west coast experience with lots of wildlife...then this is the company for you. Although, I do see that Kingfisher offers a variety of types of trips.
I would have preferred to paddle my own Cosma, but I understand the need to be in the company's boats, as they know the volume and can fit all the shared gear and food in them. Happy the boats were Seawards as we love them!! As we are experienced backpackers and mountaineers, I choose to bring my own sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tarp and PFD and was happy I did. I am older and fussier about my comfort and know what works for me. The guides were fine with that after checking out our gear, BTW :) The tents provided were spacious and paddling jackets the best. I swear our jackets did not let in a single drop of the wet coast weather! Kudos on the choice of paddling jackets.
Our guides Jen and Connor, were supremely competent, kept us well informed and in the loop on plans and were just plain fun to boot. We could not have asked for better guides and "paddling buddies". Some of the weather conditions were challenging, but our group was quite experienced and game and tackled what the elements threw at us. However a planned crossing from Nigei to Vancouver Island was too much. Try as we did, between wind, waves and current, it was not going to happen, but luckily Jen and Connor had a backup plan to return to a orevious campsite to wait for better weather the next day....which did come! We were in good hands with local knowledge. And man do those two have a lot of energy to manage a group on and off the water, cook, clean up, etc., etc....!! They do a tremendous job and I cannot compliment them enough.
The multiple wolf sightings were truly amazing, as were the many eagles, sea otters, superb blooms of jelly fish, ochre stars, anemonies, and other underwater life we could see from the surface or along the coast lines. It is truly a blessing to be able to experience a somewhat intact environment so close to home. The food was amazing and we are now addicted to the Tate's gluten free cookies (even though we are not sensitive to gluten)!!
Kingfisher is an excellent guiding company for the active adventurer. I must admit I could go for a slower paced kayaking trip as those National Geographic's I brought along are still unread!! So I hope we can return again, as there are so many places left to explore on the north island.

We booked the four days Base Camp Kayak Tour but cancelled it after a day. We don’t criticize the guides (everyone was friendly und kind), nor the general setup of the tour as described. But we didn’t realize two things, one: You must be prepared to kayak a lot (on the first day, having travelled to the island in the morning, we did six full hours of kayaking in the afternoon – imagine the amount of kayaking on a full day). It seemed that the majority of other guests weren’t there for the whales but just for the kayaking – contrary to us. Two: We paid several thousand dollars for the four days and expected glamping (meaning fancier camping) but in fact, it was camping with a bed – no water for the showers (after kayaking!), a bush toilet, just water (with a smell) and coffee/tee. For a boy scout camp totally ok, but in our opinion quite overpriced. The reason why we expected glamping is because each person paid roughly CAD 500 per day – quite a lot of money considering what was offered.
So, five stars for naturalist who likes silent kayaking for hours, only two stars for whale watchers with a need for camping with a shower.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. While I had followed up with you directly after the trip I would like to address some of your points here as well for others who may read it and are considering joining us in the future.
You are correct that our tours are not for everyone. There was definitely a difference between your expectations and the reality of our kayak tours. We definitely want to set the proper expectations for our guests so they know what to expect and are not disappointed.
Throughout our website we sell this trip as a kayak tour. It is called "Kayak With Whales - Base Camp Kayaking' and it falls under "Kayak Tours" on our website menu. This tour is designed for beginner kayakers and we kayak for a number of hours each day - weather permitting. While the whales may swim right past our camp we may also have to kayak to find the whales and other wildlife.
In speaking to your guides, they had planned to be on the water about four hours the first day but when you were almost back at camp another group of orcas came by and the group decided they wanted to stay out and watch them rather than head straight back to camp. The paddling that day was considered pretty easy with very little wind and the group had covered about 8 kilometers up to that point and only had about a kilometer to go to get back to camp,.
In trying to set realistic expectations for our guests. the video we have on this tour's webpage mostly refers to kayaking and only a small part describes "the comfortable" camping our base camps offer. The itinerary tab on the tour's webpage talks about kayaking each morning and afternoon of the tour. On the preparation tab we have a link to our guest handbook to help understand the tour in more detail , the physical requirements, timing for the pre-trip meeting. a sample day by day itinerary, and more. Links to all of this information is also emailed to you a number of times leading up to the trip. Despite this already provide information, I have taken your comments to heart and am working on a "Is this tour right for you" addition to each of out tour's webpages.
In respect to the camp, we don't market our trips as glamping and purposefully avoid the term as it is so vague and means different things to different people - though some of our guests may refer to our camps as glamping. We consider our camps to offer a comfortable wilderness camping experience. Your stay coincided with about three weeks of little or no rain and our rain water catchment for our camp shower was running low and the guides had stressed to take short showers using only 10 to 20 litres of water to conserve water. I understand you did have a shower on the one day you were at camp - though it would be unlike the one you would have at home or a hotel - and we had other guests have short showers during their stay., The following week we did supplement our shower water supply by bringing in additional water from town.
Our drinking water is transported from town to camp for every trip and is the same water as is used in town.
Our outhouses do not use running water. The 5 gallon holding tanks are switched out during and at the end of very trip and are picked up and transported back to town throughout the season for proper sewage disposal to minimize our impact on the environment.
We do provide coffee, black tea, a selection of herbal teas, hot chocolate, juice, and lemonade ore our base camp tours. But as noted in our pre-departure information we don't provide alcohol or soft drinks. This is mentioned again at our pre-trip meeting in case anyone wants to brig some of their own adult beverages to enjoy in the evenings.
In regards to price, this year (2022) your four day tour cost $1595 per person. For comparison sake one of our competitors sells a four day kayak tour without water taxi transportation (we transport our guests to and from our camps by water taxi), one guide to every six guests (depending on the trip we have a minimum of one guide for every 4 to 5 guests), and much more basic camps with backpacking type tents and just sleeping pads at $1800 during August and September - $205 more than our tour costs.
I am sorry you didn't enjoy your time with us more, but I do thank you for taking the time to write your review.

The Sea Otter Explorer trip was an amazing adventure. We travelled with a group of friends, accompanied by our wonderful guides Jen and Connor. The weather was not the best but they took good care of us. God's Pocket is such a beautiful area and we enjoyed the sea otter sightings. We were also blessed with incredible sightings of a group of wolves on one of the islands. A true highlight!! Food was excellent (gluten-free catering) and the equipment provided was great (particularly liked the paddling jackets). Five-star from beginning to end including assistance from Wendy with administrative details.

Hi we are traveling up to port hardy....8,9,10 May and I would love to have a day or two half days kayaking. Can you confirm this is possible at that time of year? Or give some recommendations thanks

Hi Kelly,
Thank you for your question, Unfortunately we are not yet up and running in early May for day tours. Most of our staff start June 1. We can often offer multi-day custom tours in May but they generally need to be at least four days long to make it cost effective.
You may want to try North Island Kayak in Telegraph Cove or Blackfish Adventures in Alert Bay but I think they will be similar in dates to us.
