I am a descendant of the Steeves family so this was very interesting to me. Great history to be learned here. Beautiful grounds.

The museum staff were helpful and gave an excellent tour. The background information on one of the fathers of confederation made us proud to be Canadians. Thank you for the history lesson.

I walked into the place on a lazy Saturday morning in Hillsborough and I was the only one in the place. I got an amazingly extensive private tour of the exhibits and the story behind the place. I did not previously know that Steeves was one of the founding fathers of Canadian Confederation, but I certainly did when I left. I also got quite an education on Albertite and the local minerals. I even got a tour of the heritage church across the street. Fascinating.

My husband and I visited this museum to learn about the history of the area, having heard about Dr. Gesner and his ties to Albert County, NB. What a great tour! The house the museum is housed in was huge, but the best part was seeing the single room where the original settlers - thirteen of them - lived; such a contrast. We learned about kerosene and albertite and the history of the Steeves. The guides were really knowledgeable as well, and seemed interested in their work, not just 'going through the motions.' The church across the road was also a treat to see inside - just beautiful.

We aren't Steeves descendants but we were shown the genealogy resources they have and, being genealogy geeks, we were awed by how many people they have in their family tree, all descended from seven sons (or so we were told).

We would recommend this museum to anyone with an interest in history or a Steeves in their family tree - what a heritage to lay claim to!

I popped in to find out what was there to see and learn. I was not expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by all there was. The guide was well informed and interesting as well as garbed in the dress of the times. I found out surprising facts that should be in Canadian history books. There was also the family tree of the Steeves family - which is amazing. I thought that I would be through in half an hour but no - it took me over an hour and I would have liked to stay longer but I had to get back home. I want to go back this summer and take my time. If you like to learn something exciting about the past, then visit this lovely home of one of the founders of Canada and take your time.

There are so many interesting items in the house, and the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. It was an unexpected stop, but well worth it.

This is an opportunity to get to know one of the lesser-known Fathers of Confederation, William Henry Steeves, as well as more about how it was to live in the country in its early years. The very modest admission fee includes a visit to the lovely Saint Mary's Anglican church.

What an amazing museum we stumbled upon on our way to Hopewell Rocks, NB.
The history of this family in NB dates back to the 1830's. They left Germany and went to Pennsylvania but moved to Moncton with 30 other families. They left Moncton and settled in Hillsboro. They had 7 sons and the daughter died! John William Steeves was a father of Confederation! The museum has a lot of historical documents and pictures and paintings! Also a lot of clothing, dolls, toys, dishes, kitchen utensils, musical instruments, etc! It was amazing! Very knowledgeable volunteers and for the $3.00 entry fee it was a great bargain! Oh I forgot all the beautiful quilts!
A must see for history buffs!
