- roaming_kiwi58Christchurch, New Zealand2,816 contributionsInteresting - but disappointing. There are two Viking sites at L'Anse aux Meadows. This one is the UNESCO and National Heritage site, which is run by Parks Canada. The other Viking site is Norstead, which is privately run. L'Anse aux Meadows is believed to be the only North American site which was settled by Vikings. The Parks Canada site has a good visitor centre, with a film to watch, several displays and a shop. You can also walk through the site where the Viking settlement was, but there is not much to see. The site was excavated, but then they covered the site over again, so all there is to see is several grassy fields. You need a lot of imagination! There is just one small area showing some modern reconstructed buildings. It was interesting to a point, at a very historic site, but we were a little disappointed.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023

Make sure that you take in the short film and have a guided tour of the grounds. The staff members are very friendy and informativeVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 25, 2023
- Irene Eng2,371 contributionsCoolWe're bused here from St. Anthony. "One thousand years ago, an expedition from Greenland landed here and built a substantial camp." Anne Stine (1918-97) was a Norwegian archaeologist, who discovered the remains of a Norse settlement here, with her husband Helge Ingstad (1899-2001). We watched a short informative film at the center, then follow a staff on the short path to the site. The sod huts are replica tho.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 10, 2024

My favourite parts were the Meeting of Two Worlds tour and the costumed interpreters in the village. The only disappointment was that the Sagas and Shadows event does not happen until July.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 2, 2024

The actors in the huts are very informative! We didn’t have the best weather when we visited, however it didn’t stop us from enjoying our time here.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 22, 2024

Reconstructed viking settlement with park staff role playing as norse settlers in traditional clothing. Can see the entire site including the tour in about 2 hours.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 6, 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California17,813 contributionsExcellent Evidence of the VikingsOur tour bus took us here. It is a remote site, not easy to get to. A UNESCO World Heritage site, very well engineered by the Canadian government. This is the archaeological dig that verified that the Vikings had a settlement in North America around the year 1000, way before Columbus. You will find a good visitors center, a long excellent boardwalk through the pretty park, and the outlines of the ancient buildings that were once here. Then some re-constructed buildings to show what things probably looked like.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 1, 2024

We also enjoyed the geocaching challenge available within the park & the challenge coin offered. Was cold & windy the day we visited but we dodged the rain & had an enjoyable visit. The visitor center is nice, we enjoyed the history movie. Gift shop is overpriced & we found much more reasonably priced items in St. Anthony.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 21, 2024

She was knowledgeable, friendly, and really engaging. She added great local flavour and wove a good tale! The staff here take their job very seriously. Be prepared to have a very thorough explanation of the history of the site and lifestyle of the locals in this area.
The 40m tour took approximately 1.5 hours. The guide stopped every few steps to answer questions people asked who clearly didn’t do their homework before the tour. Please do everyone a favor - read everything inside then head into the theatre to watch the 17min video beFore asking questions on the tour.
Tip: Allocate plenty of time to account for the unpredictable length of the tour.
It’s an interest site. Take your time with this one.

L'Anse aux Meadows is an area that Leif Eriksson and his Viking crew populated in 1000AD. This is the same Leif Eriksson that I learned about in High School......small world. Leif proceeded to build shelters out of earth. A tour of one of these sod huts revealed interpreters who played out domestic Viking scenarios depicting what life was like in those days......pretty rough going.

What an amazing place. The views were spectacular! There are two different 'trails'. A shorter one that leads to and around the viking camp remains and the recreated sod huts. There was a 'dig' going on during our visit. The archeologists are more than happy to explain what they are doing. The longer trail takes you the other direction over different terrains and the spectular views. There are several gnome/fairy houses hiking up the stone hillside. We did both trails. Highly recommend taking in the Sagas and Shadows storytelling which takes place select evenings, after hours. It was quite the experience sitting around the fire in a sod hut listening to viking lore from the costumed guides! The partridge berry juice, jam and seed crackers were a treat!

A beautifully maintained site but absolutely not worth the long drive from Gros Morne. Having been to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the world, this is the most overrated! Yes the Norse / Viking history is interesting but all you see are manicured lawns with plaques marking archaeological sites, overlooking expansive views of the sea, and all supported by innocuous artefacts.
Our experience was also coloured by a Parks Canada staff member who (let’s give him the benefit of the doubt) tried to be helpful but came across as condescending. Why only offer my elderly parents English subtitles for the video presentation when there was also another senior citizen there? Since she’s white, she should have no trouble understanding English? What if we all wanted to watch it in French? And if he thought my folks couldn’t understand English, how would English subtitles even be helpful? If he thought they were hearing impaired, then why not just turn the subtitles on, no need to ask! It was horrifyingly awkward.
Another staff member, who was dressed up in the sod huts, kept coughing into her hands in such a confined and poorly ventilated space. That was surely the quickest way to drive anyone away. An entirely regretful experience and only recommended for those who have reason to be in and around the St Anthony area.

I first heard about this place when I was a child, decades ago in another country. Ever since then, Ive always wanted to see it, walk it, absorb it all in. It really is worth it. There are Tour Guides to take you around, they are interesting in their own right as they live locally and the gentleman we had, played on the site as a child, long before the word Viking was associated with it. As far as he knew, the mounds were Indian Burial mounds. Personally, you need to do the tour twice, once with the Guide first, then alone. I found the walk with the Guide was too quick, you stopped at each point, they spoke, and then you moved to the next point. I, myself, I need time to take it all in, my mind is running a hundred miles an hour with all the facts about the place, the people that lived there, the events that happened...it takes time to process it all, especially if history is your thing. Overall, even though Ive crossed it off my Bucket List, I will be back to take it all in again..

We did the self-guided walking tour around the park. It was interesting to see all of the different sites and the actors doing the re-enactment telling the stories. We hiked out the coastal trail as well for a little extra adventure. I think that this is a place if you're up this way that should not be missed.

This is a place I read about and have wanted to visit ever since. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site representing the final girdling of the globe by humankind when they crossed that last hurdle, the Atlantic Ocean, My husband read some of the sagas, including the one describing Leif Erikson's travels to Greenland and beyond, so we have some background. We'd also seen the video describing the site before visiting.
The site is in 2 parts: Norstead which is the contemporary recreation, complete with consumed interpreters, and the actual archeological site. There's also a Visitors' Center. We visited Norstead first. It's a lot like Louisbourg in that the costumed interpreters play the roles of the people who inhabited the settlement and demonstrate their occupations. They engage with visitors, answering questions and role-play. It's well done and the entire place gives a vivid picture of what life in 1,000 CE must have been like.
We then briefly visited the actual site of the Norse settlement where there is little to see beyond depressions in the grass and a raised area showing the outlines where some buildings once stood. Few artifacts were found by archeologists; there are a couple on view (reproductions?) in the visitors' center. From this they deduce that the was an orderly departure with no intention to return.
It's well-worth a visit.

This incredible site is the best-authenticated Viking settlement in North America, outside of Greenland. The docents do a fine job of portraying craftspeople. My favourites were the sailmaker's tapestries and the cook's account of making seal steaks. I would probably be hesitant to eat pinniped meat, but he was a convincing fellow.
Harry Youden's Cove and Trail is a delightful adjunct to the main boardwalk trail. His miniature houses and carved fairies seem to fit right in with the starkly beautiful environment.

Does anybody have recommendations or information if you're coming from a cruise ship. Are there any options other than the ships excursions? Our taxis available for example?

At L'Anse aux meadows did you get the opportunity to work with iron and fire? Thanks!

No, only got to watch. The Black Smith told us that due to Health and Safety, they had to tone down the demonstration due to smoke that was produced in what he was doing. People had complained about it. So again, as with all things in this world now, a few people, ruin the experience for the majority...

Hi, how long would you say it takes to walk around L’Anse aux Meadows Historic site? I want to visit the historic site as well as the Norstead Village in one day, wondering if this is doable and which one would you suggest I visit first? Thank you.

Thank you all for responding. However, since we're arriving by cruise ship we won't be driving. What I hope to find out is whether a tour company can pick us up at the ship.

The L'Anse aux Meadow site is a Parks Canada protected area, so once "on site" the Parks Canada staff give a tour a long with a detailed history of when the Vikings came to the area, what they did, a how long they stayed. There is no "tour company" in St. Anthony's, however you might be able to rent a car in/near St. Anthony's---or take a cab to/ L'Anse aux Meadow. I would search for car rentals/taxicabs in the St. Anthony's area.

We'll be in St. Anthony on August 29, 2019 and would like to take a tour here. We'll be arriving by cruise ship. Do you have recommendations as to who to book one with?
Thank you in advance!
Written February 2, 2019
We didn’t book a tour of St Anthony and surrounding area, including L’Anse Aux Meadows, and I doubt if there are any tour companies as this is a small area. You will get a free tour of L’ Anse Aux Meadows. I suggest that you do a little internet research ahead of time, rent a car and just go. One tip I do have is to drive to the village of Goose Cove, 5 miles north of St Anthony. It’s a quaint fishing village witha small park there (forget the name) that is overlooking the water and has walking trails, a gazebo and several benches. Just follow the main road and it dead ends there. We saw 2 whales lounging around right off the shore. They were close enough to see their blow holes. We were there in August and didn’t see any but I understand that this is a good place to see icebergs. Anyway Goose Cove is a beautiful spot and away from the tourists.

Are there any camping areas nearby for a motorhome?
Written January 13, 2019
Sure! I HIGHLY recommend the VIKING RV PARK which is very close (and you might even spy a moose en route from RV park to L'Anse aux Meadows...BONUS!)
The park itself is always updating...stayed there twice within 5 years...1st time we tented; 2nd time I drove all around NFLD in my Class B motorhome and was amazed at all the improvements here. Small cafe/snack area at the office; behind the office bldg were nicely appointed and CLEAN washrooms, and a small laundry area (which was the cheapest I'd found in NFLD). The pleasant lady owner is very accommodating and the rate was also about the cheapest of our trip. The sites are easy to access, large, grassed areas, parking lot/driveways gravel, hydro & picnic tables at each site, but can't remember if water hook up also.

If you only go to the archeological site and recreated settlement it’s about a 10 minute walk each way but there are also quite a few stairs coming out of the information centre. There are additional walking/hiking trails but you can get to the site without using those.
