Fox Island Trail

Fox Island Trail
4.7
About
A 5.5 km hike. It is rated as being easy-moderate in difficult. The trail is a loop that displays the beautiful coastal scenery, views of the surrounding communities and local wildlife. The last portion of the Trail takes you through the fishing village of Champney’s West and along back trail for more spectacular coastal scenery. By choosing the alternate route off Trail and through the community you will increase the difficulty. The Trail goes past the fishing stages and wharf of Champney's West. These images have been included in provincial commercials and advertisements. You may even find an opportunity to chat to a local resident.

We enjoyed this more than Skerwink, to be honest. We had a glorious day and the ability to get down to sea level when you get to the halfway point makes this hike very memorable. Nothing beats wandering down to the ocean with nothing but a lone fishing boat in the view! And walking back through the village is also interesting. Fantastic walk.

A fairly easy to moderate 5.5 km. hike (more to the easy side) that has spectacular coastal views and views of the surrounding villages. We had our hiking poles and in some spots we were glad we did. Allow a couple of hours at an easy pace and this will give you plenty of time for pictures. One recommendation I could pass along is at approximately 3/4 of the way through the hike you have some options. If you turn right at the "Y" you can climb a hill (if you wish) or go to the left (again at the "Y") and this will take you through the village of Champneys West. We went left and through the village. Although there are opportunities for some really nice harbour photos the path is all on the road once you are back in the village (dusty when vehicles pass by) and there is quite a steep hill to climb back to the parking lot at the trail head. Personally I would have rather we turned back at the "Y" and followed the hiking path back the way we came and see the views we had seen from the opposite direction.

The Fox island trail has just been extended to a 5.2 km circular hike. It is just as beautiful as the skerwink with fewer crowds and more varied scenery. Plus it has the added attractions of the Champney's West heritage house and aquarium - both worth a visit

This trail is less scenic than others in the immediate area. However, for an inexperienced hiker, or group it is very accessible and easy. We have only hiked this trail once, but it is a nice change. We were visiting family in the area for 10 days, so we had ample time to add this to our itinerary, but I would not recommend squeezing it in.

Tip - it is easy to skip the most difficult part of the trail - the 'fox island' as the cliffs are steep. We were hiking with a senior in her late sixties and avoided this part by staying on the path.

The trail ends in a small village, which is quaint and nice to have pictures of.

A delightful walk - fine for most people. For the more adventurous cross the isthmus and climb up to the top and down the beautiful grassy banks of Fox Island - not for the faint hearted on the way up.

Fox Island Trail a beautiful scenic trail, the sound of the water on the lovely beaches, relaxing on the Hiscock bench to just enjoy the view then to walk through Champney’s West. Certainly recommend this trail!

Not as challenging as The Sherwink but still physical enough to work up a sweat. The views are beautiful as you meandering you way through various coves, rolling meadows, and a small community. Very picturesque Newfoundland.

The trail is great. we were blessed with a cool calm day (12 degrees) with a bit of cloud cover. Perfect! The views are wonderful and the walk itself very pleasant. It is possible to walk over to Fox Island (I suppose) but we just took in the sites.
